Americans just like to refrigerate everything, that's why our fridges are gi-normous!

I've noticed things go off sooner here than in the US. They use less preservatives here, perhaps? But, because of that, if I buy enough groceries to really fill up our small fridge we can't eat it all before we have to start throwing things out.

Here is an article from the Center for Disease Control, which states that eggs are safest when stored in the fridge. It is a US government organisation, though, and it only refers to the prevalence of salmonella in parts of the US, so maybe it just isn't a problem in Britain?

Also, there are parts of the US where it gets much warmer than in the UK, so it's possible that in the UK they just don't have to deal with the kind of food spoilage you could get on days when its 40 degrees C and 99 percent humidity.

Americans are freaks about germs. The cleaning aisles are ridiculously full with everything claiming to do everything.

It is true how weather in different parts of the world effect food storage. Growing up we never refrigerated bread, but when I lived in Africa I had science experiments every other day. I didn't have a refrigerator (or electricity for that matter) to store leftovers, but I was taught to reheat things very well. I never got sick.

Argos had two types of waffle irons... ours is the square kind and makes great waffles.  Not only that but waffles like pancakes are dead easy to make.

So too are hamburgers.

As for eggs... well they don't come refrigerated out of the chicken do they?

Plus if you read most egg cartons here in the UK it says quite clearly that they are best kept refrigerated.   Maybe I am just odd in that I read cartons and boxes of things though.  ;D

I wonder how long someone can survive here in the UK simply trying to survive on "American-style" foods.... ::)

Yep...I guess it only applies to once you get home... strange... though in most places I have noticed that the eggs are stored on a shelf some where "near" a refrigerated section....  so does that count?

My word to the wise would be this:  if it's hot in your kitchen then put the eggs in the fridge.

I still put mine in the fridge despite my kitchen being one of the coldest rooms in the house.

It also depends on how fast you will eat them and how many you buy.

Probably a while if you also buy US style ready meals and the like....  I don't vouch for authenticity, taste or health though.

Plus if authentic they could lead one to further poverty.

I also think it would lead to a very boring and limited diet.

So go on...try something new.... ;D

Not only do you have the UK to try, but there is most of the EU.

Most fridges here have those special egg holder thingies just for the purpose. (as long as you only buy 6 at a time!)

Oddly, my NEW fridge came with one that holds 7 eggs.

Where on earth do you buy 7 eggs?  I know they were talking about packaging them like that a while back (an egg a day), but I still buy mine in 6s or 12s.  ::)

Maybe they figure you would buy a new carton of six eggs before you've completely run out, so thus you are left with one egg from the previous carton.

Well, you know, the person who started the thread has hit the 4 month mark which is around the time most tend to start to get homesick, the honeymoon is ending, and it's when you start to look for reminders of home for comfort. Nothing wrong with that, and that's not exactly trying to survive on American style foods alone.

So far going on 6 years for me though  ;)
