Proper Salutations
« on: October 18, 2005, 01:20:02 AM »
Anyone know the proper salutation for the sponsor letter?  Yo, English Dudes!  just doesn't sound right.

Often we do what makes sense even when it isn't any good.

Mine wrote "Dear Consular Official:" although I am sure it doesn't matter.

I always send applications adressed to the Entry Clearance Officer, and then 'dear sir' or 'to whom it may concern' but it doesn't matter really.  Sometimes my clients send support letters addressed to me and the ECO always accepts them too.

I think we used "Dear Sir or Madam"

At first we put "To whom it may concern" but to me it sounded a little too much like a suicide note  [smiley=hanged.gif]

'Yo, English Dudes' might be seen as inappropriate as our consulates are also staffed by Welsh, Scottish, and nIrish.

Unless you are in the business of corresponding with the Foreign Office on an official basis, they are not going to take too much note of protocol and etiquette.  And it's very rare that anyone above an MBE would be posted to a consulate anyway.  So whatever's right for you will work fine!
