You have got to read this book
« on: October 17, 2003, 02:44:11 PM »
I'm sorry if you already have, or if I'm telling you all something you already know, BUT if you haven't you have got to read Bill Bryson's Notes from a Small Island.  It's one of the funniest books I have ever read.  It's all about when the author first moved to this country from the States and all the differences he encountered.  Having lived here for 18 years I am able to relate to a good 80% of the book and couldn't put it down.  It's a must for the expat.  And if you think you might be having some trouble adjusting to the change, this book will make you laugh at it all.  Bill Bryson recently moved back to the States after about 20+ years in England.  I understand he's decided to move back to England again.  Hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

Also I would like to say what a great site this is.  Been looking for an expat site  for a while (knowing there must be one out there) and not finding anything, and just came across it by accident while trying to find some Twinkies (which I didn't find).  Thanks for a great site.

I read that book right before I moved to the UK, absolutely loved it! I should read it again now that I've lived here long enough to appreciate what he was talking about more. ;)

Also, i've just read Bill Bryson's Short History of Nearly Everything... it was tremendous.
I'm done moving. Unrepatriated back to the UK, here for good!

We also saw the "Notes from a Small Island" video -- it was fantastic because he took you to all the places he was talking about and showed you what he was refering to.  VERY good.  DEFINATELY see the video too.

Am re-reading his "Notes from a Big Country" (part of my homework on trying to understand you Americans  ;)!!!), and am enjoying it as much the second time as the first.

His chapter entitled "On losing a son" (about sending his son to college for the first time) I have found particularly poignant, having my daughter now at university, and missing her like hell.

I started reading this a week ago and though I don't have a lot of time to read, I find myself thinking about this book when I can't read it. Bryson has such a way with words and points out everything I find lovely about the British.
