Factories in London
« on: October 30, 2005, 08:49:59 PM »
I need a job immediately so am looking for factory work.  I just moved here a few days ago but I was in Dublin for a month and had no luck.  I have been looking for hotel and restaurant work but they all say the same thing -- "we want somebody who would fit in".  Im a quiet person and they dont like that, apparently.  But I figure a factory wouldnt be a problem.  So any specific names of factories in London would be great.  Ridiculous that I have a degree and previous experience doing crap restaurant jobs but I get treated like this.  Im a citizen of an EU country, by the way (a country full of similarly quiet individuals).

I'm not sure how industrial London is these days.
Did you have any particular kind of factory work in mind ?
Does it

Not factories in the steel and oil sense.  But like sandwich factories, ice cream factories, etc.  The places that assemble those god awful pre-made sandwiches.  That kind of thing.  Its not done from India.

My husband is a maintenance operative for Peugeot autos here in Coventry. The pay is pretty decent. Not sure if you would be willing to commute each day though.

Also we have Jaguar and Rover here although I think Rover may have shut down last year. Rolls Royce was here but they pulled out a few years ago although they may still be making airplane engines. Not sure.

Auto factories seem like something you need experience for.

If you can get the name of the premade meals place, that would be nice.

NOT!!! You should see the ogres that work there. Lucky if they can even sign their name! Frank had to get a qualification for his maintenance job but the regular production operators are just people off the street some never finishing high school.

I am an autoworker in the States.  Many associates here are have at least some college education.  It was different many years ago in the older plants, but the newer, highly-automated facilities use different production techniques that require a knowledgable workforce.  We even have a tuition reimbursement scheme.

Never seen a green person there.  Leprosy would be grounds to be off on disability, I would think. Ogres, well, there's bosses everywhere, I guess.

Maybe I could get a better position in a plant over there, if the average worker is that bad.

Often we do what makes sense even when it isn't any good.

The pay is probably much better in the US also!
Frank got hired on at Peugeot after working 10 years in Spain and Southern France as a holiday rep! He didnt even know how to drive a car but they took him on. The factory is old and very dated. There are more robots now but most the work is done by pure manpower. Everyday there are injuries!
Frank is now getting his qualification for maintenance. He will be working the robots. The course is difficult. It's all about electrical systems, etc. But he will get a nice pay raise!
My brother in law has worked for Jaguar for 23 years and he never set foot in school after he finished high school at age 16.  Same goes for my next door neighbor. He worked for Massey Ferguson for 25 years and Im not sure he ever finished high school.
