« on: November 03, 2005, 04:48:17 PM »
We registered Courtney at the registry office here, was just wondering if we have to do anything else for her? Or is she now a UK citizen since me and hubby are married? And do I have to put her on my application for my FLR? Thanks ;D

She's a citizen as long as you were married at the time of her birth, and you don't have to include her in your FLR application!

But since you are an American citizen you should also Register her at the US embassy in London.  Not sure how that's done though.   After all she is intitled to Dual citizenship :)
Only Time will tell.. it's just too bad she's a closed mouth B**!!!

You will need the 'long' birth certificate though when applying for her passport.  If you didn't get this, see if you still can request it.

If you ever intend on taking Courtney to the USA she must enter on a US passport only! I know this is total BS but its the rules now. I still havent registered Coby or Jack. They both have Brit passports but cannot enter the USA on them so I guess they wont be going! Im too stubborn to have them registered!

Same here Ricki. We decided not to make her a dual citizen. Once she is old enough we will let her decide if she wants to become dual.
Just out of curiousity,is there any rush to get her a passport? or will I only need it if we decide to go aboard?

I read that last bit as "if we decide to go OVERboard".. I was thinking, I hope not! lol

Wait, why can't they travel to the US withot US passport?  Can they enter with their Dad a British citizen?

If you are a US Citzen you must always enter and exit the US on a valid US passport.  It has been the law for a very long time, but it is only recently that they have been inforcing it. Most airlines will now refuse boarding to a US citizen or someone who has claim, but not been registered (ie. a baby) who is not traveling on a valid US passport, due to the heavy fines placed apon the airlines.

According to the US state department if one has claim to US citizenship and enters the US on a foreign passport they are in effect, renouncing their right to claim US citizenship.   Its been law a few years but now they are really enforcing it.  Airlines will get fined $5000 + if they let someone board a flight to the US and that person has claim to US citizenship but is travelling solely on a foreign passport.  I got into a bit of trouble when I went to the states to visit my parents and my baby was on a Brit passport.  My Brit DH wasn't with us.

Basically it's stupid.

Wow, I never knew.  OK, so then as soon as I have a child I will be going to get their US passport.  (As well as their UK one)

My son has a British Passport and an American passport. He has both for birth certificates as well. His birth certificate of being born in England and then a "report of birth abroad" which I got at the American embassy. When I received it in the mail his soc. sec. card was included. So basically he is both, which is great for him because he can live either place for the rest of his life. I don't remember any of it being a total nightmare to get -- it was 6 years ago though. We just had to renew both passports (they are both 5 year) and it wasn't too big a deal to renew either. But I think it's important and probably protocal to register the birth of a child to an American citizen abroad.
