Suitcase full of American food
« on: November 04, 2005, 04:54:48 PM »
Just got back from the US this week.  I brought back loads of goodies.  My UK friends/family did not like Hershey Bars. More for me  :D

Hmm that's funny.  My Brit and his family LOVE Hershey.  They say it has more of a cocoa taste rather than being so creamy.  My DF also looooovees Tootsie Rolls.  Although I laugh so hard at him every time he says it.  I, and I think Americans in general, pronounce it "TUTsie Rolls."  Well he actually says "TOOTsie rolls."  It's hilarious :)

Maybe it's a Midwestern thing?  I've never heard it said like that before DF said it. :)

My husband and my Brit inlaws hate Hershey. They say "It smells like sick."

Also Im from Chicago and we say "Toot-SIE" rolls. (which by the way my brit relatives dont like either!!)

OK!  It's a ME thing that says "TUTsie Rolls" then :)  Don't know where I got that from, I slur my words a lot though?!  Must be it.  :)

wow, what's a Hershey's kiss candy bar? I have a weird visual of a bunch of kisses forming a bar! smells like sick, eh? Would be torture to bring them to the Hershey factory then huh?

hmm, I think my accent on the "toot" and "sie" are the same.

"tut"sie like you'd say King Tut? hmm, can't imagine it  :)

Yes thats exactly what it is! I think its a row of 6 or 7 kisses all stuck together side by side and the bottom has a cookie crunch I think. I had one ages ago so I dont remember but I remember the shape! And I guess it does smell like "sick".  My Brit neice says the same about Crayola crayons!

Kraft Mac and Cheese powder packets

exactly! why waste valuable luggage weight and space with the noodles!?! When I lived in Kenya, I had a friend who also spent two years in Kenya send me a letter from the US with a powder packet after she returned home. The stuff was like gold! It is amazing how far you can stretch out one of those packets if you are desperate for Americana!  ;D

Hersheys chocolate does smell like 'sick'. It's the weird fermentation process they use on the milk. I find it nauseating, too! Green and Black 70% cocoa solids is much nicer.

I'm going to the US in a few weeks and plan to bring back several bottles of my beloved Liquid Smoke. Does wonders on tofu!
