On the DVD we got, one of the special features is an interview with an old Rosemary Clooney. She was saying that while she could sing (Rosemary - man could she ever!), she couldn't dance. And Vera could dance like nobody's business, but she couldn't sing -- all her vocals were dubbed. I didn't know that -- interesting about their complementary talents in any case.
Oh yes, Vera was always dubbed. And Donald O'Connor (my favourite dancer) was scheduled to play opposite her but he broke his ankle in rehearsal! So Danny Kaye was brought in - but he was no dancer, so they had to bring in some nameless bloke to partner Vera - and to me, this is always the weakest bit of the film - her dance scenes. As much as I LOVE Danny in this and he is so funny - I always wonder how it would've been with a real dancing star like Donald in my favourite number, The Best Things...
Thus ends my White Christmas lecture!
But I love Rosemary Clooney and have all her Christmas songs on cd...
