address requirements for travel to the US
« on: November 10, 2005, 07:17:07 PM »
My apologies if this has come up before and I've missed it. An Italian colleague has just booked flights to the States and has been told by the travel agency that he must furnish the airline with his passport number and US address prior to departure or he will not be allowed to board.

I've looked at a few different airline websites and they all seem to have a different take on things. The system seems to be called the "Advanced Passenger Information System" but exactly to whom it applies (i.e. US citizens resident abroad) is unclear.

Does anyone know about this?

That's interesting, MeShell. It's what my colleague thought from his travel agency info but according to United Airlines

"Advance Passenger Information for Travel to the US is Now Required

Effective October 4, 2005, U.S. legislation will require foreign nationals to provide to air carriers a valid U.S. address during their stay “before” the departure of their U.S. bound flight. U.S. citizens and U.S. Lawful Permanent Resident cardholders are exempt from this requirement." (http://www.unitedairlines.co.uk/qenglish/visa/index.html?navSource=UnitedNews&linkTitle=Visa+Info).

I booked my flights before this date so don't know whether I should contact the airline or let them worry about it in Belfast or Heathrow.

Have a read of this........it is from the US government..

From a legal stand point our bosses have told us to collect the info for ANY passengers regardless of nationality.

This is really just the legal form for the airlines stating they need all passenger information

Thanks, MeShell.

Attachment A is really scary. I didn't realize that I was giving the feds my email address and frequent flier info (and credit card number?) every time I go to the States. Out of interest, what's "go show history" and "travel status of passenger"?

The Visa Waiver Programme (VWP)
The VWP allows the citizens of certain countries to travel to the USA without having to obtain a visa prior to travel.

The nationalities currently entitled to use the VWP are as follows:

Andorra  Australia  Austria  Belgium  Brunei
Denmark  Finland  France  Germany  Iceland
Ireland  Italy  Japan  Liechtenstein  Luxembourg
Monaco  Netherlands  New Zealand  Norway  Portugal
San Marino  Singapore  Slovenia  Spain  Sweden
Switzerland  UK

Nationals of these countries must hold a Machine Readable Passport (MRP) in order to travel under the VWP. Holders of non-MRP passports must obtain a USA visa prior to travelling to the USA.

Other requirements if travelling on the VWP are:

Travelling for business, pleasure or transit only, and

Staying in the USA for less than 90 days, and

Hold a confirmed return or onward ticket (or e-ticket receipt), and

Present a completed I-94W form to the authorities on arrival in the USA. (These forms can be obtained at check-in or on-board the aircraft.)

Please note, you must have the address and zip code for where you are staying to ensure you are able to fully complete the I-94W Immigration form when you land.

---------------------------------------------------------

I got this from the BA website........

travel status is whether you fly or a no show...not sure about the go show history....
