UK citizen coming into the US through Canada
« on: November 11, 2005, 12:18:59 AM »
Does anyone have any info on what the procedure would be or is for a UK citizen crossing into the US from Canada?

My DF and I will be flying into Toronto next May visiting a few friends then crossing over the bridge or tunnel at Windsor.   DF is wondering if anyone knows what if anything they do differently when crossing the border on land rather then the air.  Will they have a form like they do when flying for him to fill out?  Or anything similar?

 Any info would be appreciated.

Hi there

My Uk hubby and I just flew into toronto pearson in late june/early July 2005...we drove from toronto to detroit..

.we crossed into the US over the bridge and the customs there was a nitemare!!!!...first of all they pulled over a lot of the cars...i think we were pulled over because he is from the UK...and when we got into the building, there was a very unorganised cue....as in all the people waiting to be seen were just standing in crowd form...

there was no take a number or anything like that....i cant remember how long we were there.  and there was only one toilet with no lock for both men and women...eek

..but when we finally made it to the front of the cue (which we did by me waiting on one side of the room and he in the other), he had to pay $6 to get a green type card in his passport...they fingerprinted him and took his photo with a web cam.....they wanted to know the reason for our visit to the US>....we told them we were going to ohio for our sisters wedding..we were staying in the US for 10 days.....i think it would have been much easier and quicker if all the customs bit had been taken care of at the airport....at least we know what to expect next time...my hubby threw the green card away on our way back into canada and there was no issue at all driving back through detroit, windor into toronto for our trip back..

we flew into toronto because it was cheaper then detroit and we wanted to spend a few days in niagara fallls..

good luck....Lisa

My husband is a Brit and we just got back from Pittsburgh.  While we were there we decided to drive to Niagara Falls (it was absolutely gorgeous!).  We drove from the New York side to the Canadian side with no hassles (cost about $5).  Then we drove back from the Canadian side and they just asked why we were there (to see the falls...eh), and we showed them our passports and had no trouble at all.  Only took a few minutes.  They did pull over 1 car ahead of us, but they drove off before we went through.  Hopefully you won't run into any trouble. :)
