We lived in a studio flat that was open plan and in the shape of an L.  The kitchen was at one end of the L and the bathroom at the other.  To get to the bathroom, you had to go through a hallway that was no more than 3'-4' in length.  The start of the hallway had a door and the bathroom too.  Could never figure why there were two doors in such short space, though after hearing that the door/kitchen/bathroom thing, it did make a bit of sense.

Regarding all the doors (sorry to stray off topic)
When we were going to get a loft conversion we were told we would have to put a door on our kitchen and replace the glass paned doors in the living and dining room with plain solid doors. All this has to do with fire code.  ::)
Also all our bedrooms upstairs have 'fan lights' above the doors. We were told those would have to be blanked out.  ::)

Weird. I was surprised to see in a couple of houses that you had to go through the kitchen to get to the bathroom. I thought that was really strange!

This is typical of older houses. In many cases what is now the bathroom was a coal shed or kitchen pantry. This is b/c the houses would have originally had outdoor loos!! Houses like this don't have to conform to the newer fire codes.

I think Pebbles is right, the doors are primarily fire code stuff though there's probably something to the divison between kitchen/bathroom thing, too. The doors also have to do with heating. Before central heating, you would always have your doors shut to keep the heat in the room where you were. Unfortunately it's carried on into new builds because that's what people are used to. Drives me insane. We were in a tiny flat in Exmouth at one point. You could heat it in the dead of winter just by making toast. But every room had a door! DH and I took most of them off the hinges and stored them in the garage until we moved out!

And the doors opening in was insane in that flat, too. The kitchen wasn't big enough to swing a cat in but the door opened in to it!!  ::) ::) ::)
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

Oh, Anne!  I just want to curl up in that chair with a book and a cup of tea.  And maybe a cat.  Looks sooooo comfy!  :D

Heehee! It IS comfy!!! We got it at Cargo - it was a floor model that they were desperate to get rid of and it was a total steal! As for the cats, how about a cat and two kittens? I'm usually COVERED in cats when I'm sitting in that chair!  :)
