How did you come up with your child/future childs name
« on: November 15, 2005, 07:15:25 PM »
Following along with the "What is your favorite name for a girl and a boy???" thread, just curious how people were inspired to name their children (Future children as well)  I have a very picky husband who likes to say no to every name I say and it drives me crazy!  I'm getting a name book, but really I'd like to know if there was any inspiration other then a name book involved.  Than you!

We looked and discussed Phil wanted Jess to be named "Percephonie"  we didn't know if it was a girl or a boy so we had

Jasmine or Josephine for a girl
Micheal for a boy

We couldn't decide but when she arrived the first thing Phil said "Can we call her Jessica?"

I said "Yes" and then passed out.... :-[

I always knew I was going to use the name Aeryn, I saw it in an article about a tv program and loved the spelling. We came up with the name Courtney because one night we were just naming all these names, throwing em out and seeing what each other thought, as soon as I said Courtney, he said "yes! thats the one!"

Well, i dont have human children... my 9-year old greyhound is my beloved child!

He was originally called 'Pepperami', and i said to my DH as we left the shelter... 'that name has got to change'.

By the time we got from Battersea to Plaistow, he was called 'Davie'.... full name David Cooper Travis MacDonald.
He looked like a 'Davie', TBH... but it was really decided because my DH's favourite footballer is Davie Cooper, and he's also named after DH's long-lost friend Davie Altman (who coincidentally was nicknamed 'The Hound', so to name a dog after him kind of 'fit'!).
Travis were the most popular band at the time, and i really liked them, so that became his middle name.   Also, my dad used to call me 'Travis' when he wanted me to do 'boys' work when i was a kid.... i was always 'Tracey' when i was asked to do dishes or housework, but if i had to do gardening, or muck out the stables, my dad would should 'Travis!'...  i think he always wanted boys, cos he used to do the same to my sister Darla... she was always called 'Darrell' when he wanted her to do 'boys' work!  ;D

There really isn't any deep meaning behind Jasper's name.  We knew we both wanted a name that was different... but not weird.

I think the best thing to do is figure out what you don't want in a name first.  For example, we both wanted to stay away from any name on a Top 50 list.  Plus, we also had the "no naming a Jewish baby after a living relative" thing to our advantage - no pleas from Uncle Ignatz* to name the baby after him.  What worked best for us was to come up with a list of names on our own, then compare and veto.  We did this probably about four or five times until we realized that there were two or three names that we both approved of consistently.

You've got tons of time to figure it out - don't stress over it!  :)

*yes, I actually had an Uncle Ignatz

My husband didn't care what we named the boy so long as it wasn't my first choice ... Llywelyn.
Insert wonderfully creative signature here …

I do kinda like Otterpop's 'Pepperami'. Especaily for a girl!!  [smiley=gorgeous.gif]
Pepperami ...lovely! Better than Ricki Ricketts!

There was no deep meanings behind my sons names. Jordan Daniel is named after his jerk father, Daniel.
Brett was supposed to be a Shayna so we named him as soon as we saw he wasnt a girl!
Coby Shane was named after my father Burton Shane (my maiden name)
By the time we were preg with Jack we couldnt think of anything original at all so its Just Jack! lol Jack Francis.

Yeah we weren't bothered with picking a perfect name before she was born ...felt that when the child was born it will fall into place :)
Jess was a bit miffed when she realised that there are other people named Jessica...if she hears it on the telie she assumes someone is refering to her because she's watching the show. ::)

We had a few friends that went completely psycho looking for the "perfect name" and named their child some whooper of a name like "Star morning cloud" :-\\\\

I'm still sure I had a My Little Pony named that though [smiley=inquisitive.gif]

My two older boys are Michael John and Christopher Kenneth - their father is Catholic . . . I think that came through . . .

My youngest is Nicholas Michael 1) because Nicholas was the only name Richard and I could actually agree on and 2) because my due date for him was the same as it was for my eldest son - and their birthdays ended up being one day apart.

I like more traditional solid names for boys.  The only problem for Nicholas is the diminutive since I really don't like Nick very much. Nicknames are kind of important to keep in mind.  Two people who work at the same company I do:

Richard (Dick) Bollock
Andrew (Drew) Peacock

You'd think someone would have spotted the cringe factor in those, eh?
I know I'm late - where's the booze?
