Our daughter just looked like an Aillidh.

We had no name.  But she was a contented wee soul from the beginning.  All the midwives loved her.  One day one said, 'If you ask me, she looks like a wee Eilidh.'

And there it was.

We Anglicised her name a bit after a Canadian lady on the ward told me her niece was consistently called 'eyelid' in N. America.

Congrats, Stacey!

My daughter, Celeste Apauline, was named for my great-aunt and great-grandmother. If a boy, she would have been Marcel (call him Marc) Joseph after my husband's grandmother, and my grandfather. Our last name was very French, we're from New Orleans, both of French-Catholic ancestry, and knew we wanted French names.

Just keep listening to names. When you hear the one that's right, it'll scream at you!

I swore I wouldn't name my kids after anyone I knew.  So that narrowed the list right there.  I also wanted something mainstream, but that had fallen out of use.  The US Social Security web sight has statistics ranking name popularity all the way back to the 1930's when it started.  That was great, but DH didn't like most of them, so I saved them for middle names.  He didn't care as long as the initials didn't spell anything.

Basically we just started throwing out names and if the other person didn't say no, it went on the list.  We ended up with 3 girl names and 2 boy names before DS was born.  DH was convince he was a she and named him Holly in the womb.  But out poped a Sean Michael.  We thought we were so original, and at least 5 people said to us that that was their husbands, brothers, boyfriends exact name in the first week.  No wonder it sounded so well together.  We're saving Holly for the next one.  Don't know what we'll do if it's a boy, Sean was the only good one we had.

Guess I have a year or two to think about it.

We named Philip for my husband's twin brother who doesn't have a very long life expectancy. His middle name, Andrew, is after my youngest brother - we jsut stuck with the theme of Brothers. If we ever are able to have more, we have family names picked out as well, but from older generations. We're family name kinds of people.

We were told elder dd was a boy, so we didn't have any girl names picked out at all for her.  (She was going to be called Jackson, my maiden name, as neither of my brothers seems in a big hurry to procreate!)  We had to come up w/a name in hospital, and Kaitlyn just seemed to fit.  (I actually wanted her to be 'Caitlin', but my now ex vetoed that as it was 'too foreign'.)  Middle name - Nicole.

W/younger dd, we had a few names picked out, but once she was born she was definitely a Kirsty.  Her middle name - Mairi.  (I wanted Mhairi, but was lucky to get away w/out 'Mary', so didn't complain!)
When I am grown-up I will understand how BEAUTIFUL it feels to administrate my life effectively.

Until then I will continue to TORCH all correspondence that bores me and to dance NAKED over the remnants of its still glowing embers.

For my son who is Alexander Patrick, my husband simply liked Alexander and Patrick came from my real mother Patricia who died when I was 8 years old and simply took it from there.

And as for my baby girl who is Rhiannon Joanette, again my husband picked out the first name and I loved it as soon as I heard it and Joanette is my step-mother's middle name and whom I love dearly and always told her I would name my daughter after her if I ever had one and I did.  :)    Nearly named her Emma as I always loved that name as well.  ::)

My mothers name is Joanette.  I've never heard of anyone else with that name, only Jeanette.  Very cool :)

Wow, interesting stories everyone, keep them coming.

People keep asking if we have family names, I don't know what that means to be honest.  Part of my religion says I need to name children after dead relatives.  Not their name exactly but the initial needs to be used.

When I was 18, I became obsessed with England and decided if I ever had a British son, he would be Nigel Alastair.  Then when I moved here, I learnt the horrible reputation behind the name of Nigel (further brought home by the character of Nigel on Eastenders).

So when son number 1 came out, I stuck with Alastair and my partner at the time said he wanted a royal middle name so he chose George.

For son number 2, who I knew about from a scan, I was determined he would be a Laurence as I love the name and always have. The partner was dead against it and we had a three hour discussion where we had a right old fight. He finally came in with the express insistence it was without a W so as not to be confused with Lawrence of Arabia (he said he didn't agree with his politics! Geek.)  I let him choose the middle name so he went royal again with Henry.  I am very pleased with their names.

I always think you need to try names out..... Call them out randomly around the house to see how it sounds ;)

I was named after curtains so inspiration can come from anywhere ;D

My aunt sent my parent some "Alice in wonderland" curtains for my room before I was born they had the name "Alicia en el pais the maravilla" written all over them so this is the story my mum told me that's where she got the name from...I AM SOOO GLAD MY AUNT DIDN'T SEND MINNIE MOUSE CURTAINS!!! *Phew!!*
But never fear, gentlemen; castration was really not the point of feminism, and we women are too busy eviscerating one another to take you on.

Do it with the middle name - you can stick with tradition and still get to pick the name you really want for his/her first name.  You could also get lucky and find that you have a great name floating around in the family tree somewhere.  There's no reason you can't look back a few generations. ;)

That is a great idea!  I though I had to do all names like that!  Is it only immediate family?  Or can you go back a generation?  My mom was born in Hungary, so we have a lot of Hungarian names, thank goodness it does not have to be their names exactly, I can't pronounce some of them ;D

It really depends on what your family tradition is.  I'd talk to your mom and see what she thinks, but I'm pretty sure that it's perfectly acceptable to use it as a middle name.  I'm named for my dad's mom, Frieda.  They took the F, and made it Francine as well as my middle name.  Plus, I don't see why it would have to be immediate family unless it's important to someone or if they passed away recently and you want to honor them.  But... I wasn't raised super religious so I could be talking heathen talk here.

Another thought... if you're going to have a naming ceremony for the baby, you can always go the family route there.
