Traveling while Pregnant
« on: November 16, 2005, 03:53:04 PM »
Well, I am planning another trip back to NY again.  I'm looking to go in January.  I think that puts me at 22 to 24 weeks.  Is that OK?  I will also ask my midwife, but just want to see what others did.  I just hope they take pity on me and give me a good seat ;D  (Hmmm, maybe I should ask Rich to give me miles to upgrade!  I deserve that right!)

I flew when I was pregnant at 16 weeks and also at 22 weeks. You'll be fine. They will only stop you from flying if you are high risk or if you are 8 months or more. And even if you are beyond 8 months,if you have a letter from your doctor saying you wont go in labor in the next 3 days they'll allow you to fly

BA wanted a letter from my midwife saying exactly how far along I was. Each airline has a different standard, so make sure you call ahead to the airline you'll be using and see what their cut off date it. Also check with your midwife, and get the go ahead from her as well. I flew at 24 weeks to go to the US for Thanksgiving. It was a pain in the butt, but not NEARLY as bad as travelling with a toddler. :) Insist on pre-boarding... they even offered me a wheelchair when I got off, but then again I still had morning sickness at that point so got quite ill on the flight.
I'm done moving. Unrepatriated back to the UK, here for good!

OK, thanks ladies!  It will be either Virgin or AA (I hope) as I travel most with them.  I will talk to my Midwife next week.

Liking the pre-boarding!  I'll try to snag a bulkhead as well ;D

I saw my OB/GYN a few days ago, she advised not to travel after 28weeks, when traveling overseas.  Stacey, I am sure you will be just fine.

Most airlines have the policy that you can't travel within 30 days of your due date domestically, and withing 60 days of your due date internationally.  So you should be okay upto 32 weeks.

I flew at 20 weeks, and other than a nasty cold that I picked up on the plane it was good.  I didn't necessarily look pregnant yet either, just like I was carrying a few extra pounds so I never even got asked any questions.  Getting a seat where you can use the bathroom often without climbing over people is a very good idea, even if you don't usually sit on the aisle.
Dream a dream of England .......... Some day

You also need to check with the travel insurance that you have.  We were looking at travel insurance for an upcoming trip I have at the end of January (my husband said that there was no way I was leaving the country pregnant with no US medical insurance!), and some of the companies wouldn't cover you if you were less than 15 weeks from your due date.  You should be fine travelling 22-24 weeks, because you'd be within 16-18 weeks of your due date.

i flew to the US when i was 34 (35 weeks on the return). not advisable! but it was a matter of necessity (for my visa.)

just check with the airlines, you might need a doctors note.
