How long a wait to see a specialist while pregnant?
« on: November 17, 2005, 01:17:17 PM »
How long can one expect to wait to see a (medical) specialist while pregnant?  I had my thyroid oblated earlier this year and had only been on synthetic thyroid hormones for a few months before becoming pregnant.  My endocrinologist in the U.S. was very concerned about my medication being monitered during pregnancy and my GP seemed to agree at my first appt. with him.  At my 5-week booking appt. he sent a referral to a specialist to monitor my thyroid function and medication, but I haven't yet heard from the specialist regarding an appointment.  I know that it can take a while to get in to see a specialist, but I'm concerned that my thyroid function has not been checked since I became pregnant, and hoped that I would be able to see a specialist sooner rather than later (especially with my morning sickness and not always keeping my meds down!).  Should I have heard from the specialist after 5 weeks, or is that hoping too much?  At which point should I call my GP?  Thanks!

The specialist will send you a letter with the time, date and location of your appointment.  I'd phone your surgery about it.

You may or may not also be referred to an OB consultant in the 3rd trimester.  I was for elevated BP, but if another specialist is monitoring your thyroid function you may not need an OB at all.

Call your GP now!  This is important!  When I was waiting (A Month) to see a specialist here, I would swear mine forgot.  We saw her by chance dropping her kids off at school, the next day I had a letter!  Now mine was not urgent, but I would classify this as urgent!!!!

I know that my GP is out of town for a while.  Can I just call the inquiry line, or should I make an appt. with another GP in the practice?

Actually, I was in two weeks ago to see another GP for a stomach bug, and I mentioned that I hadn't gotten a letter from the specialist yet.  He seemed to think this was odd and made a note to check on that, but that didn't seem to move things along.

5 weeks since my booking appt. when he said that he would send a letter, and then 2 weeks since another GP in the practice said that he would check into it.

That is way too long!  Call the surgery, ask for the GP you saw 2 weeks ago.

Just call the desk, JA, b/c they should have it on file and another GP can chase it up.  Or the practice nurse.  Doesn't matter which GP in particular.

I agree with the others, give them a call.  You should have at least received a letter with  appointment details.  I am in a similar situation, a mid wife sent me to see a Consultant, who then referred me to a Cardiologist.  The Consultant told me it was an urgent matter, it has been four weeks and I have heard nothing.  Call them and good luck!

Sorry, this is just pissing me off that nothing has been done for you ladies.  I was waiting for the pregnancy hormones to kick in, I think they have.

I'd agree w/you there.  It does no one any good to panic or get stroppy.

I'm sure it will all be sorted appropriately.

Any joy?

I've been referred for Day Assessment tomorrow for crap bp (now up to 150/100), so believe me, if you hoot at that GP, you should be able to get seen pronto!

That's definitely too long to hear something. Make some noise but be nice about it! i waited about 2 weeks to hear something but since I'm not exceptionally urgent, won't see the specialist for another 3.
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon
