i've gained about 12 lbs since moving to england.

i blame it on getting adjusted to being married.  Not english food

Oh, and all the wine i drink all the time.  i used to only drink on weekends.  now, it's almost every night.

I've shaken the habit a bit thank goodness!

Have you looked into the South Beach Diet?  I have PCOS (whoo hoo!  ::)) and my doctor suggested it as our bodies have such a hard time with sugar and simple carbs.  It's been a lifesaver for me...have been following the plan for nearly a year and have lost about 70 pounds.

There's a little group of us here who are trying to firm up --- Shrinkers.  PM vnicepeeps for access!   :)

oh, OK...awesome! My boss was doing that diet for a while and he lost 2 stone pretty quickly, so maybe I'll give it a shot...they might even let me borrow their book! haha ;)

I was out of the country for two years and it was amazing how fast it is gain weight in the US, not even from eating junk! In Kenya, I was eating loads of carbs (contrary to US diets) so I never got skinny, but the food was so far from being refined or processed with additives, fake sugars and fats. You really have to make an effort to eat wholesome in the US since there are so many substitutions in so called "healthy" options. And well, we all know portions are out of control in the US. I would have no problem with half the size at half the price!

Have you checked out the new food pyramid yet? http://www.mypyramid.gov/

I just wanted to share with you how much I can sympathise! :) At this time last year I was beginning a five month stay in India and indeed despite all the natural foods, vegetables and fruits one might eat----and an epic battle with stomach parasites (village water [smiley=bleck.gif] ) I managed to gain weight! Like you said all those carbohydrates mainly in the form of naan, chapati, rice; oh and don't forget all that clarified butter and whole milk!

Were you in the two year peace corps by any chance?

That's interesting, Sohniye, I eat a mostly Indian vegetarian diet and in the last two years (since I made the switch) I've lost 30 pounds. I only eat whole grain options, though, and nothing dairy, even ghee.

Haha I blame my Indian host mother!!! ;) Even the chapatti was slathered with ghee and chai full of milk! I spent my last three months in villages, the food while a bit cumbersome was fattened up by water buffalo milk---strong stuff! I totally agree, Indian food is very healthy once the portions and dairy are brought into control. Yet for the middle to richer classes in India food equals love  and being fatter is considered an asset, a sign of health and wealth.

In any case, since I came home I took the best of the culinary skills I learned and slimmed them down :D

In any case congrats on losing 30 pounds! :D I am trying to do that myself by October.

I actually gained a lot of weight when I first became vegetarian.  The only way for me to lose weight is to eat a vegan diet with no bread, pasta, etc..
And, lots of excercise (sadly enough :( )

I've lost weight since I've been here, but when I came here I was on a big "Bridal Diet".  Familiar anyone????  Now that's over and lo and behold, I'm pregnant.  so, here comes the weight again!!!  Oh well, all part of the life cycle, I guess.... :)

I actually gained weight moving here to the UK.  I don't have my license, so I do walk and ride a bike.  Since Jan I have been working at home, but I go to the gym 5 or 6 times a week.  Still can't get these hips to fit into these jeans over here! ???

My daughter decided to go vegetarian, and I've seriously been considering it... at least part-time!  ;D
