Fanny and all those other words
« on: August 10, 2002, 04:13:24 PM »
From what I've been reading, a couple of people mentioned the word Fannyas something that might not be appropriate.  Why?  If I don't get anyone to respond I may just have to ask someone at the airport when I arrive!

What other words give the same response as Fanny?

Cheekey?
Bloody?

[smiley=inquisitive.gif]

thanks

Good Lord.  It's an indication of how long I've been here that I found that subject title shocking.
Let's just say it doesn't mean your bottom and leave it at that-and no it wouldn't be amusing to use it in mixed company to get a reaction.
bloody is a mild swear word similar to damn-so don't use it around kids, granny, and your boss-and don't use it til you've lived here awhile and feel comfortable saying it-otherwise you'll sound like a lemon.
the best translation for cheeky is being abit of a smart-alec, only with charm.
Hope this helps.

d00d, your wife has a fanny, and you don't  Work it out...

I know in the US it means bottom.  Well, here it nearly does.

Why would you use it at the airport anyway?

The usual swear-words are trans-Atlantic, we've seen enough US movies and TV shows over the years to know a cab is a taxi, a diaper is a nappy and a faucet is a tap.  (brings a whole new meaning to tap-dancing....)

Other than  that, welcome.  I hope you enjoy it here.

Cheers!

this reminds me of something that happened when i was working for a company in london:

the female IT director was in the USA visiting the parent company, and was in a meeting, attended mostly by men. during this meeting she was making notes with a pencil. and at one point during the meeting she said to the others:

'does anyone have a rubber?'

to which she got very strange looks!

rubber of course also being an eraser :)

i'm not sure whether she got lucky later that evening, hehe

I learned about this word, and also about 'nipping out' to go somewhere.  Nearly fell outta my chair when Michael said there.  It means something TOTALLY different here. ;D

"Sorted" is a good all purpose kind of word that you will soon find yourself using.  My wife quickly picked it up when she came to live in London and still uses it now we have emigrated to the US.

As well as putting things into the correct order, it means repaired, organised, booked, tidied etc depending on the context.  You may be "going to get it sorted", or "have sorted it already".

Well I'm a little late to this particular thread, but....

Fanny is only one of the many words that have a meaning here and a different one in other parts of the world.  Such as:

*bleep* = Cat (England)
*bleep* = male chicken (England)
Pants = underpants/mens panties (England)
Bathroom = place that one washes (England)
George Bush Jnr = character from the Sesame Street(England)
Queen = Woman who's a figure head of the country (England)
Trunk = Boot (England)
Elevator = Lift (England)
Moving stairway = Escalator (England)

and so it goes on...

England and the USA divided by a common language

More on the words front.  :D

I had a coworker ask me for a rubber...to which I gave her a very odd look.

Fag...being cigarettes or Fags and Mash being a meal...bizarre!

When I first got married I told my Mother in Law that I was going upstairs for a lil bit and she thought I meant I was going upstairs for sex!  (rofl)

I'm still a bit shocked by the use of twat in office language!  :O

The jello/jelly/jam debate can go on for hours.

The use of geezer in casual conversation (and not as in an old geezer).

lol, I could go on for ages!  :D

Oh yes we all have these stories don't we ?

Like the time my MIL asked how Ian was handling the bullying at school and I replied that he was holding up okay and that he was a 'spunky' little kid.

Poor woman started choking on her drink. My husband later explained that while 'spunky' was a valid adjective I had basically just called the kid 'fertile' :-X .....<groan>

and the fun continues..... ;D

Yes *Spunky* or *Full of Spunk* can mean so many things....

In the states - Gutsy
In Auss - Sexy
In UK - er....male reproductive fluid (to put it nicely)

Yes I know....I came here using two of the 'worst' words quite casually in my day to day vocabulary with the kids.

Along with the usual pitfalls my two biggest fears are accidently calling my son 'spunky' again and remembering not to yell at the twins the usual Mom order, which of course was.......'If you two don't knock it off you're going to get a smack on your fanny right now !' :o

I considered having 'gutsy' and 'bottom' tattoed across my forehead at one point as a helpful reminder  ;D
