Chinese Take-away
« on: November 26, 2005, 07:56:18 PM »
So, I'm wondering.  Do they do Duck sauce, Soy Sauce and hot mustard here?  I noticed they never give any when we have take-away, so I've asked Rich to ask for them.  Has anyone ever received these when ordering in the UK?

Rich btw had no idea what Duck sauce was.  I used to have dozens of these packets in my fridge from ordering so much in NY!

Anyway, just curious.

LOL!!!  Well, Rich came home and handed me a bottle of soy sauce.  (He went to the shop to get it)  Maybe I will have to get some of the other packets and bring then back with me!

Can you find the hot mustard and duck sauce here?  Maybe at an Asian shop?

Chili Oil

1 cup dried red peppers - diced
1 cup sesame oil
1 cup peanut oil (can use sunflower oil)
5 tablespoons cuyanne

heat the two oils together in a sauce pan until s piece of red pepper sizzles when dropped in (do not over heat).
add the chopped up peppers and cuyanne, stir in, remove from heat and cover.
let sit over night.
rough strain the mixture using a slotted spoon.
pour into a jar and store in fridge.
Lasts for about 6 months.

Duck sauce?
Perhaps thats a NY Chinese thing?
Never heard of it here, or in California... unless you are talking about Hoi Sin sauce, which is what comes in a wee tub when you order crispy aromatic duck here?

Like Expat, im RIGHT into the chilli oil... i buy it from the takeaway... they charge me a quid for it and put it in a small polystyrene tub.  I then decant it into a glass jar when i get it home.   I think the stuff they sell me in there is spicier than the bottled stuff from the Chinese market.

Maybe try 'soya' sauce next time and see if you still get a blank look?
That's what it's called here... but you'd think they'd work out that 'soy' and 'soya' would be the same thing...

Really?  Hmm, I'm almost positive I've had it in CA, and every other place I've ever had Chinese in the US.  It's a peach coloured sauce that is very sweet.  Nope, def.  not talking about Hoi Sin.

Maybe try 'soya' sauce next time and see if you still get a blank look?

The bottle Rich got says Soy Sauce on it, FYI.

Right-i-ho.... apparently my suggestions were no good to you!  ;D  ;)

So, is duck sauce different to normal sweet & sour sauce?  Or the same thing, apart from the colour?

Huh?

No, it's different then the sweet and sour sauce they use on say sweet and sour chicken, pork, etc.  It's really good though, I like it with the hot mustard mixed in.
