Toddler toothpaste
« on: December 05, 2005, 09:07:22 PM »
I was shopping for another tube of toddler training toothpaste for my daughter today and noticed that all of the ones in the store were flouridated.  I was surprised, as in the U.S. I was always told that you can't give flouride toothpaste to toddlers because of the danger of them swallowing it.  Does anyone have any insight into this?  It must not really be that risky to give toddlers flouride toothpaste, if that's what they do here, but I still can't get my mind over that, as I was always cautioned against it in the U.S.

I think if you're mindful of how much toothpaste goes on the brush there's not nowt to worry about.
I know I'm late - where's the booze?

the water is not flouridated.  in the US, it is.

weleda does a natural toothpaste w/no flouride, you can get it in Sainsbury's.

The non-flouridated water worries me... I'm going to have to get some mouthwash with flouride... Flouride is good for the teeth! :)

I wondered if it might be the case that the water was non-flouridated here.  Thanks, that answers my question!

i worried about this too. but most areas in the UK do not have flouride added to the water, which most places i lived in the US, DID.

we use a toddler toothpaste for our son, but we only use a drop of toothpaste, enough to cover and clean the teeth and if there seems to be too much extra 'foam' in his mouth, i use a tissue and wipe it out! (he's too young to rise!)

Does anyone know how old before they're old enough to rinse and spit out?  Ellen tries to imitate us and spit out in the sink, but the toddler toothpaste from the US that we have doesn't build up a foam, so she just ends up pretending to spit out.

Aillidh can rinse and spit out, but when SHE feels like it.  Most of the time, she swallows and then spits out, which sort of defeats the purpose, but hey, she's 2.
