Courtney has a cold. Shes coughing, sneezing, and gets a stuffed up nose. Anyone know of a cold medicine for a 6 week old baby? She has a 6 week checkup coming up soon but I don't want to wait until then to give her something because she is so miserable with her cold  :\\\'(

Call the HV.  I think she can take a small amount of Calpol, but that's about it.  Our HV said to give Aillidh 2.5mL before her jabs.  But double check.

How about propping her cot up w/phone books under two of the legs?  Or one of those Karvol plug-in vaporisers in her room?

I thought the earliest you could have Capol was 3 months.   ???

Normally, but apparently it's okay before their first set of jabs at 2 mos. in a very small dose.  Sometimes, their temperature spikes after their jabs as well, in which case they can apparently have a little paracetemol/Calpol.

Dunno if it's okay for just being bunged up, tho, but HV would know.  Is Alicia about?  :)

Sorry to hear she's not feeling well.  Jonah had a cold at her age and I was told not to give him anything.  We would soak a cotton ball with warm salt water and rub it under his nose. It would annoy him and he would suck some of the water into his nose, loosening the snot and then he was able to sneeze it out.  Does that make sense?  Anyway, I hope she is feeling better soon.

I think he thought I was trying to torture him, but it really does work well.

Saline drops (or Kathleen's ingenius use of a cotton ball) are probably the only thing you can give her right now.  It does help loosen up the gunk in the nose.  The only downside is that the the poor little ones hate it.

When mine had a cold around that age we were told to keep him upright as much as possible to help drain his sinuses.  Also, a cool mist humidifier can help a lot.

Colds are the worst... I'm sending happy, healing vibes your way.  :)

Thanks for the advice. I see my HV tomorrow I'll talk to her about it.

Its so cold out lately no wonder she has a cold :( . I keep her swaddled up in a blanket and keep the fire on,that seems to help a bit with her stuffiness. Shes starting to snore now cause of her stuffed up nose, she snores louder then Dale! :P

I've seen wedge shaped pieces of foam you can slip under their cot mattress or sheet to prop them up a bit, or you could just use the ol' phone books under two legs of the cot trick to help boost her up.

It's so awful when they're that tiny b/c they're used to breathing out of their wee noses and leaving their mouths free to feed. :(

How about turning hte shower on in the bathroom and sitting in there w/her whilst it fills up w/steam?

Ask the HV if it's okay to use one of those plug in vaporiser Karvol thingies as well.  I always keep one to hand, w/refills, for when Aillidh gets a cold.

DS was so misserable with his first cold.  We had to give him saline drop in his nose, let it sit and then suck all of the snot out before every feeding so he could suck.  We also put some folded up towels under his mattress to prop up his head ( and alot of sleeping in mommy's lap in the rocking chair ).
Dream a dream of England .......... Some day

I remember this is what my mom always used to do for us when we were little.
