What do you miss?
« on: November 03, 2003, 02:26:32 AM »
I'm wondering if everyone here could help me out a bit.  For those of you Brits now living in America, what do you miss most about the UK?  Specifically.. what FOODS do you miss most?  If a store were to open up down the road from you supplying british goods.. what would you be most inclined to buy?  Both food and beverage / brand name goods and deli-style food.  Thanks!  :)

Terinth, not sure you're going to get too many responses, since, for the most part, we're Americans living in the UK. But when I go back to the US for short visits, I feel British enough to miss certain things until I get back home (here, the UK). Does that count? You didn't ask about TV and that's my first thing. Love it when I can find BBC World News when I'm off in some outside-of-UK hotel. Then I guess it would be the tea. Decent tasting tea. I smile when I see Marmite, but I don't pine for it *coughcough*. Cadbury's (and other European choccies) is a good thing that's done so much better than what the US does. I miss lamb, like minted lamb joints. For the short time away, you're not going to get me missing haggis, nor really Guiness, but I do make sure I get haggis, neaps and tatties in Scotland and Guiness in Ireland. A good Indian curry usually tastes better on this side of the pond. I could go on...

Oooh.. I always miss a good CHEAP indian when I'm back home in America.  Now.. there's an excellent Indian literally 5 mins. walk away from my house, but it's anything but cheap.  When I'm in the UK, I get used to having a good curry or balti maybe twice a week.  At the prices the Indian near me charges, I'm lucky to have it once a month!

Yeah.. I did realize this is primarily a forum for Americans in the UK, but I had hoped there'd be at least a good handful of Brits living in the US. :)

I also figured I'd ask the question because if any of you are anything like myself, you tend to miss british foods when returning to America even for a short visit.  So I guess the question really applies to anyone who has spent some time in England, returned to America, and craved certain foods that weren't available here.  Your response was helpful.... and appetizing    ;D

I am not a Brit either, but I'll pass along my list ...

First and foremost, I would desperately miss Schwepps Diet Lemonade.  I absolutely adore the stuff.  Most sodas are too sweet or heavy for my taste, but Schwepps is neither, plus I can barely tell the difference between the diet and regular.

I would also miss the bacon, *bleep*-a-leekie and potato and leek soup, and English tea.  Like Lisa said, I'd also miss a good curry too.

But of everything I've come to like in the UK, the one thing I'd miss the most would be the Premiership (along with the Champions League/UEFA Cup).  I didn't follow any American sports but when I came to England, I did manage to catch the football bug in a big way.  I know that they show PL games on US telly, but there's something of a soap opera about English footie that I doubt could be fully appreciated without the coverage that it's afford here in the UK.

When we go back home I am going to miss some TV too especially since I heard BBC AMerica dropped Eastenders....I have become a eastenders and Home and Away addict.

As for foods I am not sure I will miss a whole lot and our local Meijers has a "ethnic" isle which carries all the major condoments and snacks.

Hey there I am a real life Brit!  I haven't spent that much time in the US but I have travelleld a lot and thesre are some things I have missed when away form the UK:

English regional cheeses like Cheshire and Wensleydale, and some of the European cheeses (couldn't find Halloumi anywhere in Orange County), also Marmite, Branston pickle, chocolate Hobnobs and crumpets.  Everything from Marks and Spencers especially their lemon cheesecake slices. Oh and Pimms, can't do without a good Pimms on a hot summer day!

When we were living in the states, we found one extremely overpriced store quite far away that sold British goods.   We always bought:

Ribena
Strongbow
Cheese
Some candy bars like Fuse and Picnic

I'm sure there's more -- I'll ask Andrew once he gets back.

Thanks for all the replies so far.  If you think of others, please do add them.  I have a list of my own favorites  [smiley=deal.gif]

I was hoping to find quite a few common favorites!  No luck so far -- aside from the chocolate  ;D

Some of my favorites are:
A good indian
Coronation Chicken Baguette
Apple Tango
Bueno chocolate bars
Mr. Kipling Anything

Hmm.. I'm sure there are others..

I know what I'll miss when we move back to the states: a proper cup of tea.

That's pretty much about it as I haven't had much of an appetite since I moved here. I think I just don't like the food all that much.

Mmm.. yes.. Lilt, Hoola Hoops, McCoy's, Walkers, Curry Pringles (can't help it), and Walls Magnums.  I know Walls is the same company as Good Humor, but I haven't been able to find a Good Humor product that tastes as good as a white chocolate Magnum.  Anyone know of such?  :)
