where does baby sleep?
« on: December 08, 2005, 09:43:37 PM »
When my mom visited in October, she told me she had seen some recent articles about SIDS. Along with all the usual 'feet to foot', sleep on their back, don't let it get too hot recommendations, a newer one was discussed. Apparently studies are showing that babies who sleep in the same room as their parents for the first year are less likely to die of SIDS.

Has anyone else heard this? Any links?

We were certainly considering a moses basket in our room for the first month(s) but not a year!

To completely contradict this, friends of ours with a 10-mo old said they had their baby in the crib in her own room at 7 weeks and this also helped get the baby into a sleep thru the night routine.

I know in the end it will come down to us and our baby's personality, but I'm curious what you all have heard and what you may have done/are doing. Obviously I'm particularly interested in the SIDS research since that is so frighteninig to think about.
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

Our baby slept in our room in her own cot - she never liked a Moses basket - until she was a little over 1 (we lived in a one-bed apartment, however).

I'm not one for 'co-sleeping' personally.  For starters, in the UK, our bed is too small.  We have a double.  Even though we are not large people, it's small even for the two of us.

But it works for some, I suppose.

With this one, we'll try a Moses basket again, but if not we'll do the cot thing in our room again.

We'll have to see how this one sleeps.

Our daughter is a VERY good sleeper.  If this one is, too, it will be easy enough to move him/her into the other bedroom w/his/her sister at about 6 months.

My daughter slept in my room until she was 7 months and sleeping through the night.  My son is 7 months now and still in with us.  We plan to move him in with his sister once he is done with this bout of teething.

These days it is reccommended to have them sleeping in with you for the first 6 months.  We just moved the cot in our room and got on with it.  Some people move the baby out quick and it works for them.  I would have been a nervous wreck not being able to hear them, but thats just me.  I would rather err on the side of caution and get a little less sleep.

I believe the thinking behind this is that proximity equals greater awareness of the child's breathing.  It's more common sense than some mystery of biology - you'd be better able to keep your child from suffocating if he/she is in the same room as opposed to across the house.

In terms of having the baby sleep in the room, I will say this: if you're breastfeeding, it's a zillion times easier if the baby is in your room.  It makes the 3am feedings a lot less of a hassle.

Our son slept in a bassinette in our room until he was almost 4 months old.  Mainly because I was breastfeeding, but also because I felt better having him in the same room.  When he hit about 4 months, he started sleeping more restlessly and making more noise in his sleep (which kept me up) so we moved him into his own room and kept a monitor on (about two inches from my head!) in ours so we could listen for him.  I had more problems with the transition than he did. :-[

We put our daughter down in a bassinet in our room, but I nursed her laying down in bed, and all three of us would end up falling asleep in the big bed at some point in the evening.  At around 3 months or so, she outgrew the bassinet and we moved her into a crib in the other room.  She made the transition well!

I've read that too, about the risk of SIDS being lower if the infant sleeps in the room.  I think that's because the parents are more aware of sounds or lack of sounds coming from the baby during the night.

FunGirl brings up a VERY good point.  Most babies are very, very noisy roommates.

Tell me about it!  My husband's snoring hasn't bothered me once since the little guy was born.  :P

I used earplugs, but I could still hear Aillidh loud and clear.  Even now, she wakes a few times in the night sometimes.  She'll play with her cuddlies and settle herself back to sleep eventually.  But if she were in the room w/me I'd never get any sleep!

Sometimes she talks in her sleep even.

We kept DS in our room until about 6 weeks, we moved him to to other room, but kept a baby monitor in his bed.  He's 20 months now and I've had to turn the baby monitor way down cause he tosses and turns and bumps the crib around in his sleep.

I'm the paranoid Mom from hell... mine turned two in October and I still have the monitor two inches from my head!  Fortunately he's a fairly sound sleeper these days.

Turn it off!  We turned it off when she was 2 and it's been bliss!  I can still hear her through the walls.  I can hear her when she wakes up, she usually starts talking to her toys, and then after a while says, 'Mummy' or 'Daddy'.  Andrew sleeps like the dead, however, she has to really be going for him to hear her.  In a lot of ways, I envy him that.

And to think, we're going to do it all again?!

I had it off for a while, but he came down with a really bad wheeze in October.  It's back off and on, so I leave the monitor on so I can hear him.  Nothing like a 1am trip to the ER for a nebulizer treatment to instill fear in you!

We actually never used a baby monitor.  If something was wrong and she got going good enough, we'd hear her!  No need to get one now for the new baby, as our flat isn't that big.   :)

Unfortunatly the bedrooms are far enough apart  (got to love the US 'roommate' apartment layout) that I can only hear him when so worked up that there is no hope of getting him back to sleep.  I recently turned the monitor down so that I can only hear the crying and loud talking.

So basically I will not be sleeping for the next few years, is this what you are all saying :P

I already plan to have the moses basket in the room on the floor next to me.  My SIL did this for the first three months and them put the baby in the room next to theirs.
