Good idea!  We did this, and traded lists.

Keep in mind that many forenames Americans consider modern, 'unique' or 'different' can sound, well, naff to many Brits.  Certain trends that are popular in the States, such as using traditional surnames as forenames, strike some Brits as odd.  So does giving a child an ethnic name when he/she is not of that ethnicity.

Compromise comes in handy!

Lola, I love your name!!!  I would use it in a heartbeat!!!! ;D  Very good idea, except that would mean he would have to actually do it!  He is not a lazy guy at all, just works really hard and also at home in the evenings.  It drives me crazy sometimes.

I so agree expat!  And I can compromise, but I get none of that.

Maybe I should threaten to leave, it seems to work with him.  He actually hears me when I say this to him :P

I've been more proactive with the name books than DH but he did do a couple quick perusals. So far we have a list we both agree on to some degree or another. Actually chosing the final one will be the hard part!
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

Lola, see the girl is mostly sorted, it's the boy I need, seeing as I have boy feelings.

Stacey!  I told you, you are free to use our first choice for Molly since we didn't need it. ;)

See that is why we need men to rein us in when it gets a bit silly.  I seriously, and I mean SERIOUSLY suggested using the name Ripley for Molly. :o  You know, like from  Alien.

Choose several names.  Sometimes, the baby just doesn't 'look' like the name you've chosen.  It's strange, but true.

I poured through several name books before my first was born.  I made lists, refined them and made more lists.  Then I gave Keith the books.  He let them sit for ages, leafed through one of them occasionally to humor me.  It drove me nuts.  Eventually, he looked at my list and picked a few he liked from it.  I could have killed him.  I stressed and stressed over it and his input was over in about one minute.  On the positive side, we got to use one of the names I loved, so it worked for me in the end.  Hang in there!

All I can say is that I am SO GLAD I didnt have a child back when I was in my "hippie stage". Back then I wanted name like "Jerry Garcia Surname" "Sunshine Daydream Surname" "Casey Jones Surname" ................ Notice a pattern? :P

we sat up the night before i was due to be induced.... i wanted Alex (glad we didnt now) and Sean wanted Calvin. so i agreed to Calvin if i could pick a middle name beginning with J (so he could be CJ when he was older, as i wont like Calvin being shortened to Cal)... so around 11pm, june 23 2004, we decided on Calvin Jacob..

good luck on name choosing!! :)

Another thing to be aware of -- make sure you're not unintentionally naming the child what could be considered a "chavvy" name, because that will label your child for life. Be very careful!

Oh my God, what would be considered a chavvy name. I would hate to come over there with my three beautiful daughters just to find out that their chosen names are chavvy in English culture!!!!!!!!!! What a nightmare!
