I was told you can't have a credit card here until you've been a resident for one year, however, my husband easily added me as an additional cardholder on his credit card

I was here for just over one month and was offered my own credit card by my bank when I first opened a current account with them, so I don't believe there is a one-year residency rule.

I think the residency rule is not universal, but dependent on the bank or agency issuing the credit card.  Some of them do say that you must be a resident for 1 (or even 3!) years.  Our bank told us that we could try through them for a credit card after 6 months.  We're very hesitant to apply too early, though, as if you are declined, that goes on your credit record.
