Hi, I've heard about it but I don't know anything about it... I think I actually considered it four years ago when I was looking at colleges in the UK. Sounds like it will be supportive to you if it's an American institution. I did what you did and went to a university in England straight out of high school. It was a cool experience, although I withdrew. And yes, you can work on a student visa, as meggles said.
