Name Change Help
« on: November 05, 2003, 02:35:45 PM »
Got a questions and cant find any answers, maybe someone here knows:

When I applied for my leave to remain, Steve and I just got married and I wasnt about to wait around on the name change on my passport, soooo.  everything is in my previous name.

I just booked a flight to the US for December and forgot the name thing, so my flights are in my married name, not the name on my passport or indef leave.

So what happens?  Can I just show the airlines my marriage certificate and other proof of identification?

I was thinking about going to the Embassy and having my name changed on my passport BUT how will that effect my indef leave (it will still show my prev name).  Will I have to have that changed?

Gotta act fast ...if I do need to change anything.  only have 5 weeks before take-off.

HELP!

Go to the Embassy and have them amend your passport.  It's easy-peasy (if just a bit tedious waiting around).  They'll simply type an amendment on one of the back pages and emboss it with a stamp, with a stamp on the first page saying "See Page ___."  It won't effect your ILR - doesn't affect my (or the boys') FLR.

That's your best bet - because the airlines really make it clear the name on the ticket has to match the name in the passport.  That's why I was in such a hurry to get the boys' names amended in their passports because we wanted to book the tickets for our trip this month in their 'new' names.

Besides, the trip to the Embassy is a good excuse to make the side trip to Harrod's for Krispy Kremes!!!   ;D

But honestly - it's very simple and the best way to deal with the situation.  Just make sure to go on Monday or Friday, when they're open in the afternoon as well (from 2-4pm).

I agree with Peedal. It's really easy to get the amendment on your passport. I mailed my down and got it back 2 days later!! They're very efficient down there.

So you can send your passport and your marriage license (or a copy thereof, I assume one that is a certified copy) and a letter requesting your name change amendment?  Do you need to send a self addressed stamped envelope as well?  Thanks!

Considering the postal strike backlog - I'd go in person.  And treat yourself to some Krispy Kremes afterwards (you'll need the sugar/energy just to get home, trust me!).   ;D

Hmmm..  it's a four hour trip by car, six to six and a half by bus, and over three by train, assuming I can afford it.  Sigh..  Oh well, life could be far more difficult.. lol!  Thanks for the advice peedal.  As it now stands, however, I'm not expecting to need my passport for another 16 months.  Don't know yet if I will risk it or not.

HipShot - you're a bit far.  But I know that ItsBcoz is close enough to make the trip - she's closer to London than I am, I  think.

Debbie,

I'd just send it in if you're not rushed. I'm sure it'll be back to you within the week. And you'll need to fill out an application which you can get off the net: http://www.usembassy.org.uk/cons_web/acs/acsindex.htm  you do need to send a stamped self addressed envelope with it.

They're only open in the morning on Thursdays - until 11 am.  So I would get there early!   :o

I'm Back.... barely made it to the office before they closed ... arrived 10:45am.   Although the process was painless .... the wait was endless, LOL.  I'm soooo impatient.  Didnt get out of there until 2:00pm.   So be prepared to wait ....even if you get an amendment.  All said .... it's FINALLY done and I wont have to do it again, LOL.
