going to Edinburgh for Burns Night
« on: December 25, 2005, 06:29:40 PM »
I have a palce to stay and am using the £18 return fare offered by NatExpress (despite the 12 hr journey)...
I'll be in Edinburgh from  24 Jan-27 Jan.

I'm really looking forward to seeing Burns Night done in its homeland. I've been to one put on by the Scots/Bagpipe Society in Orlando, FL last year...

Do pubs/restaurants usually put one on? Will I need advance tickets?
I've no idea what to expect!

I hope you're not expecting very much...
I have been here for 20 years, and have never seen Burns Night celebrated, apart from, as you say 'Societies', which you probably have to be a member of.
The normal/average person doesnt celebrate it... you might find a few pubs that will have haggis & neeps on their menu as a 'special' for the night, but it's really not a big deal here at all.

You might try Ayrshire, though... 'Burns Country' might do it differently!

oh ???   I was told by my Scots friends back in FL (who came over from Glasgow...I think) to expect a riotous good time, like a festival, or at least a special "pub night"

the family I'm staying with there owns a pub (they are friends of my housemate here in Leics) and I've told them I'd be interested to try the tradit. supper but they haven't replied yet
hmmmmm

well that's a wee bit of a "bummer" (what's good Scots slang for bummer?)

Dunno... i lived in Glasgow for 10 years and never saw anything approaching a riotous good time for Burns Night.  It's just one of those things that no one really cares about, apart from Burns Society people, and members of arts groups.   Like i said, you might find a pub doing a special meal,  or you might even find a ceilidh, but it wont be a huge deal.  :-\\\\    Burns Suppers are usually fairly solemn occasions, with a bit of ceremony and a few speeches and toasts, but not normally thought of as a 'riotous good time'.

By all means, check it out and see what you can find, but dont be surprised if there's not a lot happening.  Sorry to disappoint...

We have veggie haggis and whisky at home, but my Scots hubby has never formally celebrated Burns Night, no.

Maybe they just did it in special groups then or were looking back fondly of their days in Scotland with somewhat "colored" lenses

Or maybe they made the tradition bigger when they came to the States to help remember/promtote their heritage and sort of  forgot it wasn't that big of a deal before they came

Well, fore warned is fore armed ,as they say.
Thanks for the heads~up!

Burns night or not I'm sure you'll have a great time in Edinburgh, there's so much to see and do and the people are really friendly.

oh I know!  And thanks for popping in to say so.

I think I am more drawn to the Scots/Celtic influence anyway...at least that is where much of my interest in the Isles came from, and I quite liked my time in Ireland

I have seen photos of parts of Edinburgh that absolutely make  me want to cry, it's so pretty
I tend to get very emotional at "weird" stuff ;)

If the Palace of Holyrood is open at that time of year I do recommend it, it's worth the extortionate entrance fee, it's gorgeous.  And do a ghost walk!! They're really good!!  ;D

Oh!  Well I am there 3 days on a limited budget but I will definately see it from the outside if nothing else

Do you know anything about "Underground Edinburgh"? I heard it's supposed to be a walk through a section of very old Edinburgh which was sealed off/built over long ago?

That tends to happen a lot!

I did a wee search for you last night, but most of the Burns Night things i ran across seem to be corporate events, or £130 a ticket, or sold out!
