Sites for cheap(ish) flights to the USA?
« on: December 26, 2005, 04:02:44 PM »
Ugh...

After a drunken phone call to my mom for Christmas, I have now committed myself to going over to see the family in 2006... probably September.

If anyone wants to share the websites, etc they use for tracking down good prices on flights to the US, I'd certainly appreciate it!

Enough to make you give up drink, eh?  >:D

The two last tickets I booked, I used www.travelocity.co.uk.  What I like about them is that you can tell the site that your dates are flexible, and it will find fares within a range of months that you specify.  You can then select the dates that you want within that range.  It can be a bit frustrating, though, in that you can select a date that is claims is valid, and then it will tell you that there are no seats available at that fare on that particular date.  So it takes a bit of slogging through the program to actually book your tickets.

Another thing I tend to do is use www.qixo.com to get an idea of what fares are running, although I'm not sure that you can actually book your tickets from the UK using that site.  I'll take the lowest fare I find on there and check the actual airline sites/other travel sites to see if they match it.
When I am grown-up I will understand how BEAUTIFUL it feels to administrate my life effectively.

Until then I will continue to TORCH all correspondence that bores me and to dance NAKED over the remnants of its still glowing embers.

i usually use www.itasoftware.com to check the going rates for flights.  then i book through the airline's website directly.  i find that if there's a problem with the ticket, change of flight time, etc the airlines are more helpful if it was actually booked through them (just my own personal experience).  good luck!

Aer Lingus has cheap flights at the moment at www.aerlingus.co.uk
I paid £124 each way from Dublin to Chicago but now I see its even cheaper!
Also its a good airline. They were on schedule, the flight attendants and ticket counter people were very nice and the planes and the food were good!

drunken call to mom!   [smiley=laugh4.gif]

hubs found his flight from london to san fran on BA through www.expedia.co.uk was about 200 pounds cheaper than elsewhere... also flying July-Sept is usually more expensive.

when was the last time you were here?

Yeah, if you can avoid flying between July and September, please do. Disturbingly expensive. I paid 700 quid for a LHR - SFO return for August 05 and cried in my emtpy savings account. Stupid brother getting married...

Besides Travelocity and Expedia, I'd also try www.opodo.co.uk and going to your local Flightcentre office. They will beat your published online fare by a quid!
