Seriously, I don't know what I hate more...packing or unpacking.  I've had a similar schedule of moving to yours.  When will the madness stop?!  :P

I hate 'em both!!!!

How does one gain credit if you can't be approved for anything that builds credit without having previous credit?  >:(

I hate that catch-22. I transferred my AmEx over so they gave me credit, at least. I've also been meaning to apply for store cards (M&S, Tesco, whatever) to get more credit. (I hate credit cards, but sadly they're a necessary evil in developing credit history.)

This again. Times a million... I did not sleep at all last night due to this awful cold, and I would like to just stay in bed all day. But I refuse to call in sick this early in the term.

I hope you feel better soon, PL! I dragged through a 3-week cold, not fun.

I cannot recommend Alvin Hall's Your Money or Your Life enough:

Where is my commission?  ;D

Get better, PL.  :)

I read it, and have to admit I was underwhelmed, given how much the personal finance world raves about it. I don't know, to me it seemed rather...obvious. You think you're making tons of money making £X/yr, but - gasp - it turns out that you're not because of taxes, opportunity costs of working, hidden costs of working (clothing, transport, etc), etc. And yeah, if you blow a bunch of money on stupid stuff you're never going to be able to stop working because you'll never get ahead. Pretty basic. ;)

(That said, I've never been big on spending money, and am currently living on about 35% of my gross salary with the rest going towards savings/retirement/debt elimination, so perhaps I'm not really the target audience.)

My left boob has developed a large shiny swelling at the bottom of my cleavage (where boob joins rib cage) it's rock hard and it hurts really badly, so sure it's an infection of some sort under the skin. Fabulous, I arrived in Liverpool miles from my doctor 3 hours ago for 5 days (it hurt this morning but it was 5am so I didn't have time to think about it.)

Oooh, CB, that sounds painful! Take care of yourself.

My IA is that a meeting was scheduled on Friday (when I don't work) for today.  I just found out this morning and have been frantically working on a presentation for..noon.  Eep.

You're just a good bit of PR for that publisher!  :P

I'm fortunately okay with money - my mother runs her own accounting business and I often did work for her growing up, so I'd like to think I'm sensible. It's the fact that I don't have credit here that's causing problems. I'm looking into getting a credit-building credit card (the ones usually labelled "high risk") just to buy something every once in a while and pay it off. I hate that all my good credit from the US can't be transferred over here so I can get a pretty, new phone without a massive upfront payment! :(

That sounds awful, CB! :( Take care of yourself and find a walk-in clinic nearby, especially if it gets any worse!

My current IA: I'm trying to focus on my dissertation today, but my neighbour (below) has his son visiting and his son has some sort of mental disability. He talks so loudly that it's impossible to concentrate, but I can't bring myself to say anything to someone who clearly can't help what he's doing. So I am trying to play music to drown it out, which is only preventing concentration even more!  :-\\\\

FYI, I asked about a secured card (where you pre-pay in advance) as a way to build credit (like you, just to buy something and pay it off), but was told they don't actually impact your credit. I don't know if that's true of all the cards or not, though.

Oh noes!  >:( Please get it checked out ASAP, whatever you have to do, even if that means going to a walk-in surgery or something. Boob infections and such can get out of hand quickly and make you really ill if you don't start treatment straight away. Obviously, I know this from experience, so please don't ignore this and wait the 5 days until you get home.  :-[ :-\\\\

Yeah, I can't imagine a pre-paid card does anything for you. I'm actually looking into proper credit cards, but for people with bad/no credit. I found an article that was rather useful:

The real annoying thing about my situation now is that I can't apply for anything since my BF and I are supposed to be moving on the 30th but the lettings agent is taking forever with the referencing, so I still don't have an address to use! *sigh*

The Red Line train I got on this morning was already very crowded and some bloomin' woman was sitting there with her revolting lap dog in its carrier on the seat next to her -- a "Priority" seat!! The T is really going to the dogs.

Thanks for the info. :) I'll look into applying for those.

Good luck with the move!
