I cannot recommend Alvin Hall's Your Money or Your Life enough:
Where is my commission?
I read it, and have to admit I was underwhelmed, given how much the personal finance world raves about it. I don't know, to me it seemed rather...obvious. You think you're making tons of money making £X/yr, but - gasp - it turns out that you're not because of taxes, opportunity costs of working, hidden costs of working (clothing, transport, etc), etc. And yeah, if you blow a bunch of money on stupid stuff you're never going to be able to stop working because you'll never get ahead. Pretty basic.

(That said, I've never been big on spending money, and am currently living on about 35% of my gross salary with the rest going towards savings/retirement/debt elimination, so perhaps I'm not really the target audience.)
