I have my own IA regarding those clueless in immigration. I just got my British citizenship after being here 6 years on work permit and coicidentally I am getting married in 2 months.
I was mentioning my British citizenship while talking to know-it-all acquaintance, whose response was "oh, it is so nice the British government allows you to get your passport through your marriage beforehand." I though I misheard her so I asked her to repeat herself. She obviously thought she had said something wrong because on repeat, she added "oh, is it a requirement to have your UK passport before you are married, they don't want non Brits marrying Brits?"
So while my jaw was on the floor, I just stated that it didn't work that way at all, that I got my citizenship unrelated to marriage and to get it under any track in any case, took years and lots of money - it isn't just handed to you.
To which she argued with me that I clearly didn't know what I was talking about and the British government allows UK passports for all spouses and it has nothing to do with citizenship - she has read this in the papers darnit! My boyfriend even had to step in and say "oh, I thought it was easy too but Sara is right, blah, blah...." Then I she didn't speak to me the rest of the night presumably because I told her she was wrong about something and she definitely doesn't like that.
