Tips on fingernail cutting
« on: December 29, 2005, 01:12:26 AM »
I went to cut Courtneys fingernails today since they are like razorblades I had Dale told her fingers out , ,and when I went to cut it,she pulled her hand away from Dale, and I accidently cut her finger! I felt so bad that I cried because I actually drew blood. :\\\'( :\\\'( :\\\'( .  Does anyone have any tips on how I can avoid doing that next time?. I can't go without cutting them. Her fingernails grow so fast.  .. I had no problem with it before ,because she didn't squirm as much. But now she won't stop moving.

Cut them when she is sound, sound asleep. You can test this by waiting until she is asleep and then lifting her arm a bit and then dropping it. If it just flops down, she is asleep deeply enough to cut them safely. It is hard to clip those tiny fingernails. Good luck.
They that can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety.

And if you can cut them after her bath, they are really soft, a lot easier to cut. Don't worry, you are not the only one who has done that. When Sarah was about two months, I did the same thing, except I cut off too much and drew blood. I cried longer than she did and felt like a terrible mother. But stuff happens, she'll heal and won't even remember what happened and you'll still be the same wonderful mommy to her.

Also, I had Rob distract her with her head turned away and while he was entertaining her, I cut her nails, she never knew I was cutting them since her head was turned the other way watching Rob.

I think all mums do it at least once. I know I did!

I used one of thoes little nail scissors things, I still use it in fact and my baby is almost nine lol. It is rounded instead of pointed and is easier for me to see what I am doing with little nails. Not sure if that may help? Trying to trim them when she's sleeping sounds like a good idea too.

I sympathise! It's not easy!! It gets better though as they get used to it.  I find it helps to distract them with a toy.  And yes if you don't already have them get some of those baby siccsors, Mothercare does a baby grooming kit that contains them.

I've had better luck with baby clippers than with the scissors.

I also cut every one of my babies fingers by accident while trying to do "clippy clips". I agree to try to do it while baby is asleep. I know some moms bite them off themselves but I could never manage to do that.
