can I be extempt from UK taxes
« on: December 30, 2005, 09:33:17 PM »
I'm a US citizen planning to move to UK soon.  I read a post saying that if you spend at most 2 years in the UK you can be exempt from paying UK income tax.... Does anyone know if this is true?

I'm no expert but I think you're referring to claiming back income tax paid in that tax year when you leave the country for good.  So you do have to pay it but you get it back.

The only complete 2 year exemption that exists is the treaty exemption for teachers.  If you are not an educator this will not apply.

The UK has detached duty rules that permit those on short-term assignments of up to 2 years to deduct expenses such as temporary accommodation, which might alternatively be what you have heard?
