Can someone explain a couple things to me?
« on: January 03, 2006, 01:54:01 PM »
I am just wondering what a couple things are that I don't quite understand.

What is double glazing and what does a fitted kitchen mean? My husband may take an overseas assignment when he graduates next December with his current firm he is working part time at and I was looking at houses/apartments and saw this several times.

Double glazing is like dual paned windows in the US. A fitted kitchen has appliances and may have some white goods (toaster, kettle).
Love your life, poor as it is. You may perhaps have some pleasant, thrilling, glorious hours, even in a poorhouse. The setting sun is reflected from the windows of the almshouse as brightly as from the rich man’s abode; the snow melts before its doors as early in the spring. Cultivate property like a garden herb, like sage. Do not trouble yourself much to get new things, whether clothes or friends. Turn the old; return to them. Things do not change; we change. Sell your clothes and keep your thoughts…

Double glazing means the windows have two panes.  These provide better insulation, which means you'll be warmer and your bills should be lower.

A fitted kitchen means the appliances are included (i.e., stove/oven and fridge).  You'll need to ask specifically about washers/dryers, microwaves, and dishwashers.

Double glazing is a double window pane. Useful in really cold areas and really noisy areas, but I have to say that we went from a double glazed house to a house with original glass windows and I prefer the latter - it felt TOO air-tight with double glazing and I felt like the windows were always "sweating" but it did keep a lot of road noise out....

A fitted kitchen is one with all of the appliances like the fridge, etc. fitted in - a complete kitchen.

Oops - I wasn't quite quick enough!  :D

My definition of a fitted kitchen is slightly different from the previous posters....
I believe it is a kitchen where the cupboard units are 'fitted' to the walls.... rather than free-standing furniture.

Hi there!

Double Glazing - like previous posters said, they're window units that are specially made to have the glass panels made from two layers of glass with air sealed between to provide more effective heat insulation. Other benefits include better security and noise reduction. Of course like anything, the quality can vary tremendously! but at it's basic level Heat & sound insulation are the biggest advantages.

Fitted Kitchen - Yes, I agree with Otterpop. A 'Fitted' kitchen is one thats had the worktops, base and wall units 'fitted' to the availalable wall/floor space so as to make the maximum usage of area & space. Invariably though, when a kitchen is 'fitted' the fridge and cooker are included as part of the project - so it's easy to see how the term fitted has been drawn out to include those items.

As a landlord, I provided my flat fully furnished, so it was in effect fully 'finished' - this would include things like Kettles, microwaves, toasters, some cutlery and plates, cleaning and maintenence equipment etc etc. Quite alot of agents told me to only leave the basics, ie get rid of the cutlery and plates, remove things like ornaments and nic nacs etc - which I did for my place. Any places you want to view, ask the agent/landlord what's included and if of course you have your 'own' stuff, ask him/her if they'll take away their stuff.

HTH!
Cheers! Dennis! West London Slough UK!!

Yeah, fitted may not include the appliances. It seems an odd phrase to an American but I think it is to differentiate from really old houses (i.e think old farmhouses with Welsh dressers and Agas instead of built-in cupboards and appliances).
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

Ok, what is an "Agas".

And does fully furnished mean applicances or all furniture (beds, couch, table, ect.)?
