when are they no longer newborns
« on: January 03, 2006, 08:03:12 PM »
My son, Alexander, is 14 weeks old and I just was wondering when babies are no longer newborns.  He is starting to stay woke more often.  He has always been a great sleeper.  He's been sleeping though the night since 2 months.  Now he sleeps 10-12 hours a night and doesn't take as many naps, but he seems more cranky.  I don't know if he is tried because he doesn't want to sleep and when he does it's only for 30-45 mins.  Is this normal for his age?  What time should I try to put him down for a nap?
The day I met my son is the day I became me.  I thank him for that.

Every baby is different.  DS is 20 months old and is an absolute bear if he doesn't get at least a 2 hr nap every afternoon, and that's down from 4 hrs.  He also sleeps 12 hrs at night.  When he was around 14 weeks, we were on a 2 nap schedule, a late morning nap and a late afternoon nap, with him going to sleep for the night around 10 and sleeping till 7 in the morning.

I have a friend who's son doesn't take much of a nap, and only sleeps for about 8 hrs at night.  You'll figure out his rhythm.

Courtney sleeps through the night now, usually from 11pm-8am then she feeds, and falls asleep for another hour or so. She takes capnaps for about 10 minutes a couple times a day. I pretty much let Courtney nap whenever she wants. Shes in the pattern now where she knows upstairs with lights off means sleeping time, downstairs during the day in her bouncer means naptime.
Its normal for your son to have that sleeping pattern you described,,from Courtneys age and up is when they stay awake for 10-12 hours,

Hi Dannygirl,

All babies are different of course. My advice is to go with your baby's natural rhythm.  If you are breastfeeding he is more likely to wake up at night for a feed.  My son slept through the night from about 4 months old - and by that I mean he slept anywhere between 8-12 hours per night.  At that age he was still having 2-3 naps a day.  Now he is 15 months old and he sleeps straight through from 7pm-9am!!! And he has a two hour nap most days as well, usually 2-3 hours after he gets up in the morning.  Try not to worry too much about what is "normal."  If you think he needs a nap but he won't go to sleep you could try carrying him around in a baby sling, that worked for me, or pop him in the pram and go for a walk til he drops off.

I agree with Britwife, usually when Courtney won't settle I pop her in her pram and push her around outside (if its not too cold) she falls straight asleep in there. Shes so easy to take into town...sleeps the whole time.

Courtney is also in the habit of not settling at night unless she gets a cuddle first, she won't sleep if I just pop her in the cot. I have to sneak her in there once she falls asleep in my arms..a habit I'm trying to break her out of..its so hard.

Try not to think of whats "normal" each baby goes through stages at differant times, thats why I never read those baby development sites,I'd drive myself crazy if I followed everything there
