American baby clothes
« on: January 04, 2006, 09:19:11 AM »
I received a lot of baby clothes from family back in America before Alex was born.  I noticed recently since I started buying 3-6 month clothes that the 0-3m clothes from America are bigger.  It's seems crazy to me that there is such a difference.  I put on 3-6m clothes from here and I can't image him still fitting him in a months time let alone until he is 6m.  But with his American clothes I can see them lasting so much longer.

Has anyone else noticed this?
Why do you think that is?
The day I met my son is the day I became me.  I thank him for that.

Other than buying some Osh Kosh from the US in the latter half of his first year, I didn't use any clothes from the US with my child born here.  However, I've found that manufacturers' sizes (both in the US and UK -- had a child in the US too) can vary and some times, quite significantly.
Insert wonderfully creative signature here …

I have noticed that the onesies/babgros we have had from the US are a better fit anf fit longer, I think it's because they are made of that stretchyy ribbed cotton.   Of UK brands, I've noticed that Mothercare clothes seem to be on the small side.  But I've also had US clothes that are on the small side.  My MIL just sent an outfit for Ethan that is supposed to fit up to 18 months and the trousers are already tight whereas all his UK trousers are still a bit too big or fit perfectly now (he's almost 16 months).   Marks & Spencers clothes are on the big side, so are Ladybird.  Just depends on the manufacturer.

I agree about American onesies being better fitting/quality. Carter's does great stuff. But sizes are hit and miss. My six month old is wearing some 12 month sizes now, not because he is so big, but because the manufacturer means that the clothes will fit until the kid is 12 months. Go figure. He's got loads of room to grow (especially in the feet - they are sleepers), but if I waited until he was 12 months to start using them, he wouldn't be wearing them very long.

With the stuff from America, don't wait until the baby is the age the sizes say to start using them, try them on the baby to get a sense of when they'll fit. I waited on some really cute stuff sent from home that were 3-6 mos and he got a week out of them as they were sized so small!
