Proof of Address
« on: January 06, 2006, 01:21:07 PM »
Opening a bank account in the UK for people with no previous ties is a challenge. But here is a helpful hint... instead of waiting for the first utility bill (which some bank won't even accept since anyone can do that and then cancel), once you find a place to stay have your job... in my case it was the local council (which holds a lot of weight)... write a letter confirming your address.

I had a nightmare of a time getting a bank account but in the end all they wanted was that letter and my passport... and a couple of tears because HSBC sucks, but that's another story. A couple of days later I had a shiny Visa card in my hand.

This advice may help the new social workers coming over more specifically.
