work permits...? for domestic employment

While looking at the UK VISA website, I noticed the domestic worker section says that you do not need a special VISA...I did not see anything which denies US citizens permission to do this kind of work.
But of course I'm not the best at deciphering those pages

If I were to go home after my 6 month visitor stay and come back to work in someone's household, what would I need to do?

I went into www.ukvisas.gov.uk  and was browsing the diff types of VISAs...I clicked on a link which said "domestic workers" (or something similar, sorry it was last week...)
What I remember reading said no special VISA or work permit required,but I had to run off and didn't see the rest of it.
I was hoping someone might have that info handy...I will of course also go back and see if I can find the exact page, and then if you like I'll give the full link...

These are the common options:

1.  obtain a student visa...you can work up to 20 hpw
2.  obtain a work permit
3.  qualify for the HSMP
4.  get married in the US, get your spousal visa before you leave, which will make you eligible to work in the UK upon arrival
5.  return to the US for a fiancee' visa, get married in the UK (there are other steps involved here with giving notice, applying for a CoA, etc.), apply for your spousal visa...once that's approved you can work

as I know Nothing about types of VISAs (altho am trying to learn) and what to do to get the right one, I can't say any more than that!

Domestic worker visas, in addition to what Victoria said about the '1 year under the same roof' requirement, are fiddly.  It's common to expect the ECO to get it wrong, and you'd be advised to consult with a specialist....

I had been talking w/someone here who said they could use the help and were willing to "sponsor" me when I have to leave and come back...

You'll need to be enrolled in a UK university, which means you'll be paying international tuition for the first 3 years...very expensive, but if you can afford it, it'll get you here.  Mind you, a student visa doesn't lead to settlement, so you'd have to find another way to stay here permanently once you finish your studies.

Thanks Lola...I don't  think full time enrollment or being a degree student will be an option for me.

I am  in a relationship, and we are starting to discuss me coming over here permanently (which is why I'm asking all these questions), but he has made it clear he can't afford to support me completely, and I don't think either of us is ready to commit to a marriage at this very early stage.
But we want to be together and are looking at all our options.

When I was planning my move to the UK, I also researched the "au pair" visa.  Too bad Americans don't qualify for it.  Sometimes it seems like you'll have an easier time of moving to the UK if you're from <insert name of poor, obscure country here>.
