small amounts of mold on bread crust
« on: January 11, 2006, 08:27:09 AM »
This may be a strange, silly question, but...how many of you pull off the odd spot of mold on the last few slices of bread and eat it anyway?

I have always done this in a pinch...and did it again this morning for the twin's toast. Does anyone know if this is unhealthy?

It wasn't a lot...just a few spots as big as the smiley icons...and the rest of the bread wasn't all dried out and whitish in any way.

I do it all the time. Funny enough this happend in our house just last night. DH noticed the tiny speck of mold on the corner of the bread and I leaned over and pulled it off and said good as new. He freaked out. Of course I told him if he hadn't been in the kitchen I would have done that, served it to him and he would never have known the difference.  ::)

But I was raised by my grandparents who in turn were raised on a farm so being squeamish about stuff like that wasn't a big deal in our house. Not sure how healthy or unhealthy it is. It's never hurt me...and cheese is mold...penicillin is mold...so it can't be that bad right?  ;)

I've tried to do that, pull the moldy spot off, but it still seems like the bread tastes different.  I don't know if it's a psychological thing or what but then I start to think about it and it grosses me out so I end up throwing it away.  [smiley=puke.gif]

I always just pull it off, as my mother always did. We also ate raw cookie dough as children and survived. Come to think of it, we rode in cars without car seats and managed to survive that too (not that I would ever, in a million years recommend this!).

Raw cookie dough, Nestle Toll House cookie dough, is our #1 favorite! I ate it as a child, and my children eat it too. My mom told us not to or else we would get "worms" but I am sure it was just because my sister and I would eat so much dough that my mom would hardly have any to bake into cookies! (I don't care for the cookies even 1/4 as much as I like the dough!)

Don't they make an ice cream back home that has the raw cookie dough in it? I think it was chocolate chip.

It depends on how much mold & where it is...if it's just on the crust & not too much then I'll eat it after pulling it off.  If it's in the actual bread or quite spread out then I chuck it.  A bit of mold never hurt me yet!

Yep, I just pinch it off and use the bread too. So far so good.  ;)

My mom told me I'd get worms from raw cookie dough too! LOL. Where on earth did WORMS come from??? Now she says it's because you shouldn't eat raw eggs - she still scolds me for eating it raw and I'm 37!  ::)

No raw eggs?!?! How can you have a good caesar salad???

Seriously, though, when I was in the US they passed a law in RI that no restaurants could serve raw egg. Needless to say, that incited a near riot among the caesar-loving foodies! Julia Child even got involved!

Re the moldy bread: I think I'd toss the slice that had the mold on, rather than just picking it off. But I would eat the rest of the loaf.

I keep all the bread in the freezer.  (Slice it first, folks.)  It's easy to take out a few slices and toast them.

Do you have good sized freezers there?

We have a big freezer which is nice because our fridge holds about three things before it's over-full.  ;) I freeze bread in the summer when the kitchen is warm, but at the moment the kitchen nearly as cold as the fridge (no radiator in there and so we keep the door closed. Brrr.) so bread lasts a lot longer when it's out on the work top.
