LOL! 15 minutes. But put the eggs in first with cold water and bring that to a boil. Then reduce to a simmer. Then time the 15 mins from then.

You know my one-a-day cooking calendar says to NEVER boil an egg!  it does not say how long to simmer it, but it does say not to boil.  (Stupid huh!)  I used to have one of those egg timers you threw in the water with the eggs, it lasted three times!  15 minutes sounds right to me too, especially as the water starts off cold.

Well, I have boiled, then simmered.  I am hoping they turn out.  I was wishing earlier I had one of those eggs timers.

As long as it's hard boiled it'll be ok! 5 mins should be long enough.

I always thought 10 minutes for hard boiled (from when water starts to boil).  Maybe like 5 minutes for soft boiled?

My mom always said to boil them five minutes then turn the heat off, cover and let sit for another ten minutes to finish cooking. This way the yolks stay nice and yellow.

I always do like was suggested, stick the eggs in cold water, bring it to boil and leave them for about 12 mins or so. At least 12 mins, if they go longer I don't worry. Then I put them in cold water and leave them a wee bit before peeling. Roll them to peel, it helps go faster.

I think there are a ton of theories about boiling eggs. I've also heard of people who add vinegar to the water to prevent cracking -- I've never tried that, but haven't found cracking to be a problem anyway.

I put them in cold water, turn on the fire and set the timer for 15 minutes. Also, I peel them under running water...makes it a lot easier.
