I have to say I was a little fanantical when pregnant, probably due to my age at 35, I avoided everything, lunchmeats, soft cheeses, pate, coffee, rare meat (a killer for me) and alcohol of course. I figured it's only 9mths, I can get through that for my child. The first thing I ate after giving birth was a big fat med/rare rib-eye steak, yummy.

It's like the article on tuna where the boy had tuna EVERY day for zonks... my question is why?  How is tuna every day a balanced diet?  :-\\\\

I was wondering about that myself ... but then I realised Ethan has gone through periods of eating the same two or three things every day for weeks because I can't get him to eat anything else.  So maybe tuna boy was very fussy like that too.

YES!  They all seem to take those phases where they only want to eat one thing.  I'm surprised Aillidh didn't turn into a carton of fromage frais b/c for a while there that's all she wanted to eat.

Jackson is in a formage frais stage at the moment.  I think they go through favorites from time to time.

Yeah, I think it's one thing for young kids and toddlers to go through phases but I think that it's so easy these days for parents to give up on encouraging their older kids to eat a varied diet. Heck, so many adults don't either!
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

I avoided anything I was advised to during pregnancy-of course this changed between sixteen years ago and now.  I didn't drink either.  I figured it's nine months out of your life and if you can do something to lower risks then what does it hurt.

I did eat peanuts with my first two-one has asthma, one has exema.  I avoided them with number three and so far she seems to be almost allergy free(except for a weird fish allergy).

Just my opinion. :)

How much peanuts did you eat? I did my best to stay away from them but had the rare peanut butter cup or pbnj sandwich, and with #2 while breastfeeding I slacked off a bit on the no-peanuts during Xmas and ate too many of those Planters jalapeno coated peanut things. I tried so hard during the pregnancy but couldn't resist afterwards.

With the second one, I craved peanuts and ate a LOT.  I'm talking bagfuls. :o Everyday.

Peanuts and orange popscicles were all that kept me going. :)

I lived on Tapatio hot sauce and lime juice over ready salted crisps with both of mine. And then discovered how good the really soggy crisps were mixed into mushed avocados. It's a wonder they weren't born with steam coming out of their ears - Tapatio is really hot!!

But you've put my mind at ease re the peanuts, I was very careful during the pregnancy and even with the breastfeeding it was only a lost week or so. Fingers crossed. Thanks.

Funny what keeps ya going during pregnancy!

I'm not big on nuts, but I did go for a PB&J from time to time when the craving struck.  Nothing like it on whole wheat bread from the bread machine.  MMmmmm.  And it's a quick lunch, too, when you're pressed for time.

Now chips and salsa is another matter . . . YUMMY.

Do midwives not mention it in the UK?  How strange.

Mine hasn't mentioned anything.  My OB in the states gave me the whole list and I ignored it all (except for the alcohol, which I gave up), ate what I felt like.  My sister (32 weeks right now with her first) is following her list to the letter and gives me a hard time if I have a Coke or Greek salad with feta.  I just tell her that you have to get the information and then decide what you personally feel is risky.

I craved Coke w/a slice of lime during the entire summer whilst pregnant w/Roisin.  Mmmm.  It was truly refreshing.

I'm also of the mind that what one eats during pregnancy is best left to each individual.  I, for example, could not give up my morning cup of coffee whereas my friends stopped caffeine completely.

I just find it interesting that the information isn't given to women so they can have all the facts (so to speak) and make their own decisions.
