Breast is Best
« on: January 25, 2006, 10:09:34 PM »
I just saw a commercial for a show that's on next Wed called the above. It showed a woman breastfeeding her 7 yr old, yeah little Britain came to mind. I'm a huge breastfeeding advocate and have just barely weaned my own daughter at 18mths old but hey that was a little freaky even for me to watch. Can't wait for the show though, looks really interesting.

hmm...during my HV placement I saw a few mums that were still breastfeeding ..we were chatting with the mum about their newborn and in comes the 6 year old asking for a drink and they casually latched on... :-[
But never fear, gentlemen; castration was really not the point of feminism, and we women are too busy eviscerating one another to take you on.

Words come to mind like:

Cut
Apron strings

Mamma's
Boy

Unhealthy
Attachment (no pun intended)

Socially
Crippling

funny enough it was all boys the ones that we saw. Wasn't one in the house of tiny tearaways as well? and it was the mum that had a tougher time trying to wean herself off of breastfeeding  the child :-\\\\

A lot of people carp on and on about how 'this is how it's done in Africa, Latin America, etc.'

Not.  My gran was the original Earth Mother - Mayan Indian, had her kids at home, grew her own fruit, veg, herbs, etc.  She breastfed all of hers till they were 2.  Then she cut them off brutally.  End of.  And usually got pregnant again shortly thereafter.

In a nation/area where there is no other safe, nutrious and REGULAR source of food, I can accept that as a way of life, or survival.  But in the developed world?  No, can't see it.

Don't get me wrong, breast is best.  But um, not for 7 year olds.  That's just gross.

*puts on psychologist hat* I think its a case of the mother not being able to "let go". If they breastfeed at that age they feel like their children still need them & they don't want to break that breatfeeding bond they had with the child.

I just think a child older than 2 or so, can get all of the vitamins, minerals and nutrition it needs from reg food and milk, I think past that it can become more of a mommy issue and not a feeding baby issue. As a previous poster stated, there can become an unhealthy attatchment thing going on.

Oh, certainly!  I agree that children, where it is posible, should be breast fed.  It is great for the immune system and for bonding.  But there is a time to introduce them to real food, and get them off the breast, too.  I think that most western world docs suggest weening off between 6 mo and 2 years.
