I watched the program. I am very pro-breastfeeding and have had a lot of personal experiences with my five children and also a lot of experience as a La Leche League leader and unofficial lactation consultant back in the 80's before my rural Maine hospital had an official consultant...
I think it was good to call attention to the fact that more women in the UK should be breastfeeding, but I am not sure showing some of the more "outrageous" breastfeeding situations is going to make people view BF in a more positive light! Even though I am pro-breastfeeding, I did think the 7 year-old was a bit over the top, BUT the family did not come across as completely wacky or disturbed so it was ok. I found myself thinking that I would never BF that long, but if it works for them, well no harm done.
I did not agree with the mother of twins simply weaning cold turkey like that. Baby-led gradual weaning is best...encouraging them a long as mom sees fit. I breastfed my twins exclusively for 2 1/2 years (no bottles) but at 1 1/2 years I told them NO more breastmilk was going to be made at night (dealing with the two of them was tiring) and after a few nights of waking up to ask, they stopped. She didn't have to run herself ragged at their age and she should have weaned them by taking away a feed ever few weeks, in my opinion.
The thing that got me though, is that most moms were not very discreet in nursing in public. I have never bared a breast like these women, and I have never given any of my kids a bottle even in public.
I didn't think it did a whole lot to promote breastfeeding in the UK, but hopefully there will be more positive press now.
