Can you freakin' imagine having to run home from college for your breastfeed or getting your cup of breastmilk out while having lunch with friends?? I can't wait for this program, I'm sure it's on Wed of next week, I think at 9pm but I'm not sure on the station? Does anyone know??

I do hope that  a few mothers extending breastfeeding past the appropriate point of weaning doesn't disturb women who might otherwise have decided to breastfeed their own babies.
I know I'm late - where's the booze?

My Mom used to say that when baby starts getting a mouthful of teeth, that is when weaning should begin.

Lol - sounds like our Moms shared similar opinions.  I imagine I'll follow that line of thought - should the occasion ever arise.  Don't bite the boob that feeds you and all that.

It is more than a bit disturbing to think that people are nursing their children for so long - but hopefully they have some logical reason for it.  (As opposed to just being weird boob freaks...)

I don't necessarily agree that "Breast is Best" for everyone either, but that's a whole 'nother post.  :)
Ask and ye shall be babbled at.

so who watched this program?  i caught the first 15 minutes but then my bf put his foot down and vetoed the program.  although a 7 year old breastfeeding grossed me out a bit, the mother was so blase about the whole thing.  and i found myself somewhat agreeing with her reasoning- it's important for her child to know that if she wants to nurse for comfort the comfort is always there.  why take away a blanket or thumb sucking? but still.  come on.
If you harbour bitterness, happiness will dock elsewhere.

I was fine with all of it EXCEPT the  7-year-old breastfeeder.  How ridiculous!   ::)  The mom obviously has an issue with letting go.  Ick.  Time to move on, lady!  :P

I watched the program. I am very pro-breastfeeding and have had a lot of personal experiences with my five children and also a lot of experience as a La Leche League leader and unofficial lactation consultant back in the 80's before my rural Maine hospital had an official consultant...

I think it was good to call attention to the fact that more women in the UK should be breastfeeding, but I am not sure showing some of the more "outrageous" breastfeeding situations is going to make people view BF in a more positive light! Even though I am pro-breastfeeding, I did think the 7 year-old was a bit over the top, BUT the family did not come across as completely wacky or disturbed so it was ok. I found myself thinking that I would never BF that long, but if it works for them, well no harm done.

I did not agree with the mother of twins simply weaning cold turkey like that. Baby-led gradual weaning is best...encouraging them a long as mom sees fit. I breastfed my twins exclusively for 2 1/2 years (no bottles) but at 1 1/2 years I told them NO more breastmilk was going to be made at night (dealing with the two of them was tiring) and after a few nights of waking up to ask, they stopped. She didn't have to run herself ragged at their age and she should have weaned them by taking away a feed ever few weeks, in my opinion.

The thing that got me though, is that most moms were not very discreet in nursing in public. I have never bared a breast like these women, and I have never given any of my kids a bottle even in public.

I didn't think it did a whole lot to promote breastfeeding in the UK, but hopefully there will be more positive press now.

I watched it and I couldn't believe the thing with the 7 year old.  She had a 10 year old sister who was jealous of the whole thing and asked her mom if she could breatfeed too but her mom told her no. The sister was upset when she realized that her mom and sister was also doing it hiding (maybe so she didn't get jealous). Seemed a bit messed up to me.

Both girls sit around drawing pictures of their mom's breast and pictures of them breastfeeding and have names for the breasts. It all seemed too obsessive. The younger one was going on and on about how she prefers breast milk to anything else and how when she has her own breasts she can drink her own milk!

I'm all for breast feeding but this just seemed... a bit messed up.

Can you imagine the teasing she must be getting at school now that this aired on TV?

It was disturbing to watch this mother who was so over the moon about nursing these 7 and 10 year olds (and the girls saying when they get breasts, it will be great because they can suck their own boobs!)

In any anthropology course I've taken  when they've brought up natural weaning (i.e. population control) it invariably happens around 4 - natural child spacing is 4 years.  If it goes on longer than that, then it is most certainly lead by the mother.  There are other ways that kids can seek comfort from their parents. I think that mother has serious attachment problems.

The show was called Extraordinary Breastfeeding and we watched on mute mostly, while we were carrying on a conversation.  listening to these women gave me indigestion.  Don't get me wrong, I nursed both my kids for a year each and I'm a strong advocate of breastfeeding (and I nursed in public all the time without bearing a breast).  But this, was too much!

There was several disturbing things. Especially the sister getting jealous because she cant breastfeed. And also the husband proudly admitting he as well drinks the  milk!!!

Next to the 7-year-old! The mother talked about having the daughter on one breast and the husband on the other!

Yeah that really grossed me out! I kept thinking what this guys work colleagues were going to say to him when he went to work today! Also what if some of those older girls schoolmates were watching! How horrible it would be for them to have to go to school and face that!!
I am really puzzled about the whole breast thing. Breast milk is best nobody can deny that but why cant the mothers pump it and put it in a cup or bottle for their older kids? Also I was a bit freaked that the Spanish woman really wanted the little Chinese girl to suckle and ended up giving her a breast shaped bottle. Why not just give her a regular bottle with breastmilk in it?
