Fancy a change of scenery?

Politics is the art of looking for trouble, finding it whether it exists or not, diagnosing it incorrectly, and applying the wrong remedy.

Am I the only one who just doesn't see any appeal to Dubai? :-X  (I feel similarly about Las Vegas.)  I don't want to see an artificially created pyramid, Eiffel Tower, etc etc -- I want to see the real artefact or else something in its natural element.

I've never been to Dubai, but would love to. Is it like Vegas? I've never thought that. Hmmm...

As for Vegas, I think the reason I love it so much is the upper craptastic-ness of it all! You have to just embrace the whole Vegas-y thing and not expect to see anything "real." I love it!

Not been either, but it sounds simply hideous (to me).  Blistering hot desert-like climate...and yes, I have seen it billed as the MidEast's answer to Vegas.  But then, neither hubs nor I am the stay-in-luxury-hotels-type-travelers...more for the down to earth, sometimes gritty, experiences.  The in-laws are quite similar too.  They embarked this morning for (what can only be described as a 'rough' experience) holiday in the Omo Valley, Ethiopia.  (They are 65+!! :o)

I see your point on the craptastic thing...I guess I just think there's enough crap in the world already (much of it ruining the environment) without building more 'just because we can' for grins & giggles. :-\\\\

Sorry if I'm offending anyone...it's just MO. :)

I like both sorts of holidays -- the luxury hotel type and the "roughing it" type -- but I see your point.

I have cousins who go to Dubai a few times a year, mostly because the shopping is so great. Apparently, there's a whole Festival devoted to shopping. That cracks me up. They also love going on these dune buggy things through the sand dunes -- it's supposed to be really fun! The contestants actually did that on "Amazing Race" too! (See? Everything comes back to reality TV with me!)

Words fail... ::) :) :-* ;D

(I have too much trouble dealing with reality to watch it on TV as well!)

Carolyn I must admit I agree about Dubai.  I was there for a week last year and it was just ok.  The shopping, well yes there's tons of it and you can spend days in the malls (which I did seeing as my husband was working all day) but it gets boring after a while as it's all stuff you've seen before AND it's all expensive since it's mostly imported.  It was hot as anything (this was October).  We were not staying in a great part of Dubai so maybe that added to my feelings of 'this is not that great'.  Also I admit I didn't do any of the touristy things like the desert 4x4 ride and I guess there is a tiny museum.  We didn't have nearly the kind of money you need to feel really pampered there.

Anyway just my opinion but it's ok for a short break, I don't think we'll go back though unless my husband gets another good job there.

well I've never been to Vegas but I enjoyed Dubai for the heat (in small does, thankfully everywhere has air con) and the shopping - everything is SO cheap in the designer discount stores or the markets - Geetak maybe you were in the mall where they have all the western shops? that was expensive - AND the fantastic local food.  I was lucky I had friends living there at the time who could show me around and I didn't have to pay for my accomodation (or my flight come to that as I was on a stopover on a work trip) but I would love to go back there another time, but yes for a few days, no more than a week or so, I can see you could get bored after a while.  The one thing I found really odd was no music being played in public places and it was very hard to find anywhere to buy CDs (found a shop at the airport in the end).

I would love to go on a Fam trip to Dubai...

Fam trips are what tour operators take travel agents on ........it is to show agents the hotels and what the tour operator can do for our clients........

I am doing a honeymoon for someone to the Maldives and they are doing a stopover on the way back in Dubai......

Only thing is Dubai is a massive construction site at the moment with them building Palm Island I & II, and the World Islands.........and alot more new hotels......

Maybe you know the answer to this question, MeShell. Is it true that Emirates does a flight from London to Mauritius with an included one-night stop-over in Dubai? With time for shopping? Someone in Mauritius mentioned it to me, but I'm not sure if it's true or not. I have family in Mauritius and go over there every couple of years ... it's SUCH a long flight that a break in the middle would be really nice!
