I have a mixture of American measuring cups and spoons and ones I bought here, and have always used them interchangeably. You mean to tell me there's a difference??  :o

LOL ... with things like Tbsp, there's not a HUGE difference, but there is a difference. Let me know how you do!

Oh Dear...... :-[  I've had my suspicions from time to time that my measuring cup was wrong..I looked on BBC Food as well and had a look at the official cup measurements. A US cup is 237 ml ( 8oz.) and a UK cup is 284 ml (10oz.) I bought the measuring cup here but assumed it was in UK measures for some reason?..DH said my cup is actually French??

Conversions and measurement make my brain hurt! Thanks for posting this! ;D :)

Stella, I've done the same, though it does depend upon what I'm making.  With delicate recipes, I don't mix American and British measuring devices.

i wouldn't mix US and UK measuring tools for one (US or UK) recipe but I would use UK tools for US recipes.

I bought a £1 store measuring cup so I suspect that was off anyways!  :P I want a US and a UK classic Pyrex measuring cup... aww just like home  [smiley=chef.gif]

Aw man, I forgot about those, my mom brought me two plastic measuring cups (like the pyrex ones), a 1 cup one and a 2 cup one, that has the cup measurements and ml measurements on it (everything you could ask for) which I have been happily using for all my cooking here (UK/US recipes, whatever) and now it turns out them too? (I was only thinking of the spoons and the baking cups at first). Damn!

It's the little things like this that get ya after all these years.  8)

dumb question... but shouldn't the metric conversions stay the same? I use those when in doubt. I think it is just US vs. UK cup, tsp, pints etc that are different.

That's what I thought, why I didn't worry about using either set, but apparently there's metric units and there's imperial units.... :o

Right, but a ml is the same no matter what country you're in. It's just the imperial measurements that are different once you cross the pond.

right, because that's the whole point in a metric system so we all use the same in the mathematical world.
