If you're not, then you're going to be treated as an unlicensed driver and that won't be fun.

Unless of course you're 15, steal a car, get blind drunk, and nearly run down a street full of pedestrians at the same time, in which case you'll probably get a slap on the wrist and told not to be naughty again.   :P

I got in a car wreck 6 months after arriving.   I had to show my passport with entry stamp and ticket to the local police or they were threatening to prosecute. Even though I had a U.S licence and a UK provisional and was fully insured.   I would guess you have 12 months from date of entry to the UK.
