London (Bermondsey) - ok place for family with child?
« on: February 02, 2006, 08:57:28 PM »
Hello all-

I am currently interviewing for a position at a school in the St. John's Wood area of London. If it works out and we make the jump from the US, my son will be attending the same school.  We would like to live on the Jubilee Tube Line for an easy commute.

I have been browsing online, and Bermondsey seems well-located for the commute with a number of properties in our price-range.  What is the neighborhood like? Are there families?  What other neighborhoods are family-friendly with an easy commute to St. John's Wood? I don't think we can afford the immediate surrounding area.   We also have 2 dogs (greyhounds).  Will it be difficult to find a place that will allow them?

Thank you - looking forward to spending more time on these forums if the job works out.

im not even living there yet, but I can say because I have a dog of my own, its quite the process to get your pets over there.  Six months wait, my dogs airline ticket is $2000!!! :o  Check the pets board under moving issues if you want more info about getting your pups over.  Good luck and welcome! :)

I don't really like Bermonsdey.  Parts of it are very rough and I don't think i'd really want to bring up kids there.

I would look to the northern end of the Jubilee Line if you can.  Much nicer. And greener.

I wouldn't recommend Bermondsey as an area to live.  It is gentrifying, but still not an area to live in.  I live just 3 stops north of St Johns Wood and it is a nice area.

I think I may work at the school where you are interviewing...feel free to PM me to talk about locations to live and what they are like.  As well as ask any questions you may have about the school...if it's ASL that is!

I have a friend who used to have to get off the tube at Bermondsey to catch the bus to where they lived. She has had eggs thrown at her by groups of teenager just messing around for the heck of it. She definitely would not recommend Bermondsey with kids (heck, I don't think she'd recommend it even if you didn't have kids!).

I have had to rent  in London with dogs. It can be difficult to find places where the landlord is ok with pets. If I can be of any help feel free to PM me.
Stop waiting. Start doing.
