Try "84 Charringcross road" it's a book I stumbled across when I was 14 or so in a second hand bookstore enjoyed it so much the title stayed with me for many years as did the story and it is about a friendship from england to usa in the good old days.  You will shed a tear in places but will come off on the whole feeling a better person.  It is what is great about people in book form.

Was a good movie too..  with Antony Hopkins and Ann Bancroft.  Sadly 84 Charing Cross road is now a burger king or something like that.

Well if you like mysteries/light sci fi I recommend the Eyre Affair by Japser FForde.  So very funny.  That is the first one there are five now I think.

Also, if you aren't easily offended Tales of the City by Armistead Maupin.  So funny, so 1970's San Fransisco, so easy to read since it was written as a newspaper column and the chapters are about 2 pages long.  But like I said, if you are offended by gay subject matter better not to get this one.  This is also a series there are 6.
