How do rental arrangements generally work in the U.K.? Is a 1-year lease the standard? We're looking to rent a place while we find a house to buy and would rather not lock into 1-year commitment.

You can get a one year lease with a minimum 6 months break clause. They usually require a  notice of 2 months. Remember it takes a while to purchase property here. Goodluck!

Usually there is a 6 month minimum term with an option to renew for a further 6 months or rollover as a "month by month" which means you only need give a month's notice when you want to move out.

Yes this is exactly what we did when I first moved here.

It depends on where you're going to be living. If it's a large town or a city, there will probably be leasing agencies, leases, etc. If you're settling in a smaller town or village, you may find that it's a lot less formal.

Even for a year long contract there is usually a one or two month notice period for either side.

Do be careful of unscrupulous landlords...especially in London.  Read the small print of the tenancy agreement very carefully.
