2 day parking on northern part of Piccidilly Line?
« on: February 13, 2006, 08:42:31 AM »
my sisters are arriving into London on 24th Feb.  Was thinking of going down saturday, and hanging around with them in london until monday.  I've already found a cheapish b&b, but now i need to figure out parking.  my thought was to drive down to the end of the piccidilly line and park at cockfosters, or oakwood, or southgate or something like that.  i found the following website:

http://www.tfl.gov.uk/tube/using/getting-around/parking.asp

what it doesn't tell me is if overnight parking is alright at these locations.  as i'm not a london girl in the slightest, I was hoping some of your more savy, london familiar people out there could give me insight...

also- i've tried the vinci and ncp websites- not helpful in the slighest...

thanks in advance.

we used to leave our car near Boston manor on the picadilly line for free, all the time.  Parking out there in the area we were in wasn't residential permits.  it was first come, first serve!!!!

There's some information on car parks in Enfield on the council website.  It's not entirely clear but many of the car parks say that the rate is so much over so many hours, for example, £4.20 for parking over 6 hours.  The question is, does that mean for the day or can you park for £4.20 for Friday on through to Monday?  Perhaps a phone call to the council will clear it up.  Here's one of the pages about car parks:
http://www.enfield.gov.uk/transport%20&%20streets/parking/Car%20Parks%20in%20Southgate.htm#P0_0

Aimiloo- thanks for the info... do you mean Manor House ont he Piccadilly line?  Did you ever park their on the weekend?

Matt- thanks for the link.  i rang enfield council and all the pay and display car parks are out.  i'm hoping to park on Saturday Am until Monday AM.  The pay and display is for a max of 24 hours.  So, I'd have to go out to Southgate every 24 hours (sunday am to put in more money for another 24 hous).... great idea though!

There is a car park attached to Arnos Grove Station, but I am not sure how much it costs or what the maximum stay is.  However, there are side streets around there you could safely leave your car.  There is a car park attached to Oakwood too, not sure about Cockfosters.

There is very little parking up by Southgate Station.

no, i meant at boston manor.  on the street there (residential area....)

we left our car there for months as the streets are not resident only (about a 10 min walk from the station)

Boston Manor is the other end of the Pic line though...might not be as convenient.

I wouldn't leave a car at Manor House for ten minutes, let alone overnight!!!

alright- i basically have two options...

park at Arnos Grove in the residential area.

or

park near the hotel in the center of london at £14/day (2 days) + 1 day of congestion charge = £34

no brainer really.

Victoria- thanks for the advice- one more question- have you actually parked around Arnos Grove Station???

 ;D

I am actually staying at hers tonight, so I will ask her to give me a lift to the station in the morning and do a quick reccy for you!

I failed in my mission - my mum had a flat battery so I had to get the bus to Southgate instead getting a lift to Arnos Grove.

I feel like such a failure.....

thanks for the thought!  i hope you mom's car got started in the end!

i'm going to take a chance and try and park around arnos grove.  if i can't find anything suitable, i have the address of a NCP car park near my hotel and i'll just bite the bullet and let my gps satnav direct me.

I used to park at Arnos Grove station regularly on trips at one time, as there was usually space and I knew the area.  I haven't been back there for years though, so I have no idea what the situation is like now.    Limes Avenue where my grandparents used to live used to offer parking spaces (and is only 2 minutes walk from the station), but even 15 years ago it was starting to get a little crowded, so I have no idea whether you'd be able to find a space there these days.  You might need to go a little farther away -- The far end of Betstyle Road or one of the other residential streets, or perhaps the far side of the park).

Oakwood station:  I know from an old family friend that the local council imposed a lot of parking restrictions in the residential side streets there a few years ago specifically to stop commuters parking in them for the whole day.   I'd forget Southgate:   Even 15 years ago it was also impossible to find anywhere to park within a reasonable distance.

You might also look at parking around the end of the northern line.  Totteridge & Whetstone station has (or at least used to have!) a small parking lot, and High Barnet (end of the line) has parking too.   No idea about current time limits or charges though.

just as an update in case anyone else needs to park on the northern part of the piccidilly line but i parked at arnos grove as directed by lovely posters.  i parked in the little car park adjacent to the station.  on saturday morning it was 1/4 full.  it was one pound for sat, one pound for sun, and three pounds for monday.  (sorry don't have pound sign on this computer).  i just put 5pounds in coins into the pay as you go and got the ticket.  when i returned to my car mid-day monday the car park there were NO spaces to be had.

conclusion- good parking for weekends but not weekdays...

It sounds as though the station car park hasn't changed all that much then.  It was like that years ago as well, packed during the week with commuters, but half empty on Saturdays and Sundays when I used to walk down there.

Do they still have the rising barriers in the road at the entrance and exit?
