What kind of reaction do you guys get from people in the community. I've been surprised at the harsh comments I've heard from so many of my British associates about social workers. They are always preceded with a few words like, "I'm sure you're not like this, and maybe it's different in the states, but..." Then they go on to say that the general perception out there is that people go into social work because they don't have enough skills or intelligence to do other jobs. Yesterday DF was telling me about how my future sister-in-law, who works for her local council, was saying that the social workers on her council are the laziest people she's met in her life--sitting around accomplishing nothing and avoiding taking any cases that might be difficult. She was sharing it in a context of saying that if I worked hard, I should be able to advance quickly and do well, because most of the people there didn't even try. That really surprised me since most social workers I know are constantly working very hard. Nobody so far seems to imply that I would be that way as a social worker, but I'm surprised at some of the animosity I've heard towards the profession.
Is this just me bumping into several people with strong prejudice, or is the perception of our profession really that bad there and that is part of why there is such a shortage of qualified workers? I mean, we don't always have the greatest support here either, but I at least feel like I can gain respect for my career choice. I didn't go into this for acclaim and respect, but I'm wondering what kind of attitudes I will face once I'm there.
