Here's another one- I used to read the encyclopedia for fun when I was younger (maybe around ages 7-12).  I'd just pick a random letter of the World Book off our bookshelf, flip through it, and start reading about anything that caught my interest.  Learned a lot of cool things about the world that way, but looking back it does seem kind of an odd thing for a kid to do :)

..are you my husband by any chance?  He did exactly that.  There were no other books in the house except for encyclopedias (?!)

LOL....for me, it was a choice between encylopedias, "kiddie" books I felt I had outgrown ::)  and my mother's self-help books :o  I loved the encylopedias because I could learn about so many things like ballet and Ancient Egypt and astronomy every time I opened a book!  (Yes, I was/am a geek, I admit it!) :D

Still tired of coteries and bans. But hanging about anyway.

Also another weird thing about me is I like the taste of raw red meat. I think it all started when I was very young and would taste the raw meatballs my grandmother would make. She would ask if they needed more salt, etc. Ever since then I liked the taste (not smell) of red meat.

I love to eat raw meat. We actually make steak tartar for dinner occasionally.

I was also an encyclopedia reader as a kid.

I still like to read the dictionary

Reading the encyclopedia was fun!  I still sort of do it, just via the web.  I can spend hours linking around Wikipedia.

My parents had a fabulous set of Funk & Wagnalls* that I used for years.  Of course, they were printed in the 50's and became a bit obsolete when I was in high school.  I remember having to sheepishly tell my teacher that I couldn't do my homework one night as the subject he'd assigned was too recent to be in my family's encyclopedia. :-[

*For all you Laugh-In fans.... yes, my father would frequently look at me and say "Look it up in your Funk & Wagnalls"  ::)

my nephew is 5 and if he could read, he would be reading the encylcopedia.  WHen he was three, I remember he would choose books about things like salmon migration for bedtime reading.  He also likes catalogues.  Some people just like to accumulate data.  Kind of like a garbage can that is never emptied.

No raw meat for me, please....I was actually a veg head for several years, and any meat I eat now has to be very thoroughly cooked!!!  I don't like the taste, smell, or feel of raw meat.  I think I could go back to being a vegetarian if it wasn't for bacon....drool....

I was an encyclopedia and dictionary reader, though...anymore I only break out the encyclopedias when I'm looking up something specific, but I tend to get easily distracted by other subjects that look more interesting!   :)

When I am grown-up I will understand how BEAUTIFUL it feels to administrate my life effectively.

Until then I will continue to TORCH all correspondence that bores me and to dance NAKED over the remnants of its still glowing embers.

Kind of like a garbage can that is never emptied.

Unfortunately my brain is more like a computer hard drive with limited capacity...for everything new that I learn, I have to forget something else to make room for it!  I'm surprised I still remember my kids....old 'whatsername' and that other girl.... ;)

Did anyone else have a World Book Cyclo-Teacher when they were children?  I had one of those when I was a kid -- made by the World Book encyclopedia people.  I tried to find a photo on the web but only found this description:  this 1970s learning tool posed questions in math, history and geography....  So, we were able not only to read the encyclopedia, but then test ourselves afterwards. :)
